Anne H. Conyers] family that emigrated from VA to Fayette Co., KY. Accoding to a gen. book written by our great, great Grandfather, Benjamin F. Van Meter ["Genealogies and Sketches of Some Old Families, pub. 1901], the Edward Payne family moved to KY from VA about the same time as the Thomas Lewis family - farms were adjoining in KY- several of the children from the two families married, I believe. p. 28 mentions "Mr. Payne's residence" on Main Street in Lexington, KY in 1857. Hector P. Lewis who is herein being discussed was son of Thomas Lewis and Elizabeth Payne[daughter of Edward Payne] - do not know which "Mr. Payne" he is referring to on this page. Paynes mentioned several times in book in connection with the Lewises - no real index - when this gets digitized by Mormons, it may be of help to you. But, yoy might also try theKY Census for the time period you are seearc! hing, as William Payne might well be in KY at that time and his papers woul be there possibly??? On p. 103: "Elizabeth Payne descended from a very aristocratic family of Welch and Schotch nobility, who wielded quite an influence in Scotland as far back as the year 1500. the motto on the crest of the Payne family when they fought against the Duke of Normandy at the Battle of Hastings was 'Ready! ah, ready!' Sir Stephen Payne, of St. Christopher's Island, was of an ancient Devonshire family, and was a member of the Council and a supporter of King Charles1st during the civil war; fled from England and settled on the island of St. Christopher. In 1620 Sir Robert Payne's two sons, William and John, emigrated to America. Sir William settled in MD near Leonardstown; Sir John in Fairfax Co., VA, on a grant of land made to them by King James 1st. this grant of land was called "Payne's Manor," and comprised many thousand acres. It is said that the King gave this munificent grant to placate these young and ambitious sprigs of nobility to get them to the new world, because he feared their power and influence in their native land. William Payne, son of Sir Hohn Payne, was born in Fairfax County, VA, August 10 1671. He married for his second wife Anna Jennings, and their children were Edward, William, and Sandford. The eldest son, Edward, m. Lady Ann Holland Congers, who was related to Lord Holland (Duke of Richmond). Eliz. Payne, our great-grandmother, was the eldest daughter of the above-named parents. They were m. in Fairfax Co., VA , Octobeer 27 1773. ..... Col Thomas Lewis removed to Fayette Co., KY, in 1780 with his lovely wife... [this would be the approximate time that Edward Payne and family moved to Fayette Co., KY - I believe] For what it's worth!! Thanks for the information on Edward Payne, etc. I descend through his daughter Theodosia Payne who married Lewis Ellzey Turner. I believe they all migrated to KY around 1786. It appears that this book is available on CD for $15 at www.StemmonsPublishing.com. It is included on disc #2 along with several other books. Shipping and handling is a bit steep at $9 or $10 dollars per disc. The book alone can be purchased for $24 plus S&H from a few places that I found on www.Google.com.
