I am looking for information on surname Mankin. My great grandmother's first husbands name was John Mankin. He died from TB in the 1860s and is burried in a Methodist Church Cemetary in Alexandria. I can't seem to locate the actual whereabouts of this cemetary. I am planning a trip to the DC/Northern Virginia area in October and would like to be able to visit this grave site to obtain photos of the gravestones. Can anyone please help me? Thanks in advance Stevan [email protected]
Stevan, You will find the web page for the Survey of Fairfax Co. Cemeteries at <http://www.co.fairfax.va.us/library/virginia/varoom/Cemsurv.htm>. The author is Brian Conley, who works in the Virginia Room of the Fairfax Regional Library on Chain Bridge Road, at 703-246-2123. I have always found him to be immensely helpful. Looking quickly at the online index of this survey, I don't see a Methodist church cemetery in Alexandria, but Brian or one of his fellow librarians at the Virginia Room would know best where to direct you in your search. In terms of legal jurisdiction, I believe Alexandria is not within Fairfax County, being an independent city. Nonetheless, there are other cemeteries in Alexandria listed in the survey. Good luck.
