The village was originally known as the Town of Providence. The magisterial District in which the historic old county seat is located is still known by the name of Providence, but an old newspaper Dated October 30, 1852, while styled "The Firfax News" carried the statement that it was published every Saturday morning at Providence, Virginia. The Editor and proprieter was E Hughes. Hiram Brown was the publisher and the issue now preserved in the old newspaper section of the Library of Congress carried the legend: Vol. 4 No 10, indicating that the paper had been established in 1848. The make up of the paper, its clear impression and standard width columns would do credit to a modern publication. Its four pages carry six columns each of interesting reading matter and it is well stocked with advertisements, especially from the City of Alexandria. The editorial records and death of Daniel Webster and quotes an eloquent eulogy from the Baltimore Sun.
