Gilbert Simpson (2) who managed Washington's Mill in Fayette Co., PA, returned to Truro Parish, Fairfax, VA in period 1784 - 86 according to a collection of Washingtoin's letters I recently read in the Uniontown, PA libarary. The mill was a land/business speculation deal that Gilbert Simpson managed, using slaves and indentured servants. It's clear from the letters Washington became increasingly disillusioned with Simpson and the mill. Later census in Fayette Co., PA show that Gilbert Simpson (2) likely left behind some progeny in Fayette Co, PA as there are several Gilbert Simpsons listed in 1850 & 1860 census. Did Gilbert Simpson (2) have another son James (in addition to Gilbert 5 who went to KT)? The probable Fayette Co., PA descendents of Gilbert (2) are sometimes listed as mullato in census records, did Gilbert 2 or 5 have any children by slaves in Fayette Co., PA, or, as did either spend any time among Indians when they might have fathered children?
