I think you are mistaken, I believe that the two area's share the same post office but there is only one Alexandria Va. the adjoining area is Fairfax county but that area of Fairfax county shares the same post office. Could be wrong but don't think so. ----- Original Message ----- From: <xlpn@cox.net> To: <VAFAIRFA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 19, 2005 10:09 PM Subject: [VAFairfax] Alexandria - which one? > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/SBC.2ACI/632 > > Message Board Post: > > You are so right. Both have different zips, boundries, etc. And what makes it even more confusing, they are right next to each other. City of Alexandria is often called "Old Town" to differentiate. But they are different places with different histories that are entwined. > > For Alexandria, Fairfax County info, contact the Virginia Room at the Fairfax County Regional Library, Chain Bridge Road, Fairfax, VA. You are correct - it is one geographic area (adjoining land area) and the county/city government lines divide/intersect the area - part of the land area is now located in Fairfax County but does have an Alexandria post office address - as I do at home - and genealogy records can be found for some persons in both - the city of Alexandria and the County of Fairfax. And of course Alexandria was once part of the land given to the newly formed Federal Government for the construction of the government city - thus Alexandria was part of Washington D.C. - and then it was given back to Virginia - and at some time it was also known as the County of Alexandria City. It's best to check for records at all the locations and include Arlington County Virginia too!
