    3. Hello Graham, I posted this info in Jan. 2005 on the Fairfax list: "I was just reading a local newspaper, The South [Fairfax] County Chronicle, and it has an excellent article about the "Virginia Room" of the Fairfax City Regional Libary. According to this article by Eleanor Gomolinski-Lally (January 2005), the Virginia Room holds a rich collection of regional history, genealogy, local and state government information and legal resources. The collection of historical materials is extensive, including the Fairfax Historical Index, county and military records, federal censuses for Virginia, passenger and immigration lists, rosters of soldiers and indexes to Rev. War and War of 1812 pension files. There's a lot of Civil War history also. The genealogical collection is centered on Virginia but includes other states that Virginians came from or went to, as well as countries they immigrated from. Ancestry Plus, an online genealogical database with links to other important online resources, is available. Library staff can help track down the history of a particular property through old tax records, deeds and wills. In the fall of 2005, construction on a new regional library should begin at Old Lee Highway and North street. The web site is www.co.fairfax.va.us/library or call (703) 293-6383 for information. Hope this helps!" Note: The above library is very close to the old Fairfax County Courthouse at the corner of Chain Bridge Road and Little River Turnpike in Fairfax City. A number I have for the Virginia Room: 703-246-2123. There's an historic church located on Richmond Highway at Telegraph Road -- Pohick Church. It was designed by James Wren and dates to 1774. George Washington, George Mason and Fairfax and Lee family members were among the parishioners of Truro Parish (established in 1732). It's on the National Register of Historic Places. Another older church on the National Register of Historic Places is "Frying Pan Meetinghouse" on Centreville Road, near West Ox Road. It was built in 1791 by a Baptist congregation but in the present day it's owned by Fairfax County Park Authority and only open by appointment. The burial grounds of the meetinghouse are also on the National Register. The numbers of hotels, motels and restaurants in Fairfax County must be astronomical! I know my family has stayed at the Courtyard Marriott and the Springfield Hilton in Springfield, VA.
