I believe the 1880 Federal Census Index/Abstract is online at the LDS' FamilySearch.org site. Also, it is available on CD. I realize that it is for 1880 and you are interested in 1768 and earlier, but it could help you locate Winchester's in Virginia, or another state, and could help locate Winchester's born in Virginia and even the county in Virginia, as far back as the year the person was born. If a person was 80 years old in the 1880 Census and was born in Virginia, then you would have his location, as of 1820, as it gives the county (I believe) as well as the state. It's possible that their ancestors were in that location even earlier. I did separate searches for Winchester, born 1790, 1795, 1800, 1810, and 1820, and set the search for 5yrs before and after. I set it for born anywhere(?all) USA, and living anywhere (?all) in 1880. (Can't remember the exact terminology.). I got quite a few hits. I remember one in the Carolina's, at least one in Maryland, maybe a few in Virginia, several in New England, and some in other states. Valerie
