    1. Re: [VAFairfax] Johnston/Johnson slaveowers
    2. Have some collected data on Dennis Johnston alive after 1853. Don't know who F Johnston could be. If you have dates, may have more based on what I have put together. ************************************* Over past 8 years have collected various information and saved. I have 1853 slave births - Fairfax Co transcribed by Sandra Foster that names a Dennis Johnston. It appears he also has an unmarried sister "Miss Johnson" who also provided information. There was in 1809 a Dennis Johnston who is listed with my namesake of interest PRITCHARTT in a document. Same one ??- not sure, but it so we know he is an adult in 1809, thus giving a birth date of possibly 1775? 1850 slave schedule also lists Dennis Johnston owns 40 slaves. Lots of clues here as to relationships - need to sort out. Slaves born 1853 Fairfax - owners names: (transcribed by Sandra Foster and posted to rootsweb - Fairfax co) Slave data: Apr Maria born Slave - alive Female Owner or Father: Dennis Johnson (believe to be owner) Name of mother: Mary Jenkins Person giving information: Mi¦ s Johnson (Miss Johnson) Sister of the owner Nov 1853 ------ Slave Male Alive " Daniel? Johnson Fany Jenkins Person giving information: Mi¦ s Johnson (Miss Johnson) Sister of the owner ************** interest on the jury: 1809 From Fairfax County Land Causes 1788-1824 page 52 P 84 Wagener Infant ve Lindsay & McPherson (only have part of entire case) dispute over land Signed Charles Little, William Gunnell, William Deneale (marrid to Sybl West) and John C Hunter (married to Nancy Delaney) (also a John Hunter married to Jane Broadwater in 1796) March and June 1809 Names as parties and their attornies came a jury to wit: John Wren (married to Hannah ?) Robert Preston (married to Nancy)) James Keene (???) Richard Jackson (married to Jane Donaldson) Edward Adams (married Jemima West) Dennis Johnson (??) William Johnson Travis PRITCHARTT (married to Rosa Buckley about 1809) Samuel Ratcliff P 85 (did not copy this) just beginning: George Munroe Sandford Payne and Lawrence Butler being sworn and speak the truth.. *************** Recap: There was a Dennis Daniel Johnston who owned a slave named Mar;y Jenkins who birthed a child named Maria in 1853. Also owned a slave Fanny Jenkins who birthed a child that same year. Per slave index 1850 - Dennis Johnston owned 40 slaves. If this is same Dennis Johnston in 1809, he is listed on document that includes my line of interest "Travis PRITCHARTT" re Pritchartt family. This information posted by Sandra Foster transcribed 1853 slave births - posted to Fairfax Co rootsweb.

    3. Theodore Payne was a son from John's first marriage, still living at home with his father, step-mother and half-siblings in the 1870 census. He was a farm hand on his father's farm. Theodore did not marry Annie Birch until 1871. The family of John Payne and Virginia Torrison lived in DC in the 1860 census. Note that three sons from John's first marriage were still at home and three children had been born since their marriage in Dec 1850. John died on 29 Nov 1873 at Munson Hill, Fairfax Co., VA. He was interred in Oak Hill Cemetery, Georgetown, DC on 19 Dec 1873. His first wife Jane was interred there with him at the same time. Their oldest son, William T. Payne, was the owner of the cemetery plots. A transcription of al the PAYNES buried in Oak Hill Cemetery can be found at: ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/dc/cemeteries/dcpayne1.txt Annie Birch Payne died on 3 Dec 1881 in Alexandria Co., VA. She is buried in the Birch-Payne Family Cemetery on North Sycamore St. in Arlington. Many researchers have that Theodore is buried in the same cemetery, but this is not correct. Theodore Payne is buried in the family plot in Oakwood Cemetery, Falls Church, VA. Buried there also are his sons Claude and Frank, Frank's wife Mary Margaret, and probably Claude's wife Bessie. The last is not recorded but the cemetery records are not well-kept for those years. After the death of Annie, Theodore Payne married (2) Edmonia S. Newlon. They had no children, but Edmonia helped raise Theodore's sons. In the 1900 census VA Alexandia Co. Washington Dist (T623_1698 p.61B) you can find Edmonia Payne widow with Frank W. son. They are next door to Claude, Bessie, and their two children at that time. Theodore's other son, Samuel "French" Payne mar. Hortense Leila Newlon abt. 1896. Hortense was the much younger sister of Edmonia. I hope this information helps. 3. I am sure that the line back from Theodore to Ananias is correct. I have much documentation from Arlington, Fairfax, and Georgetown DC. I began with the census records. 1850 Georgetown,DC (M432_57 p.216 line 31-39) John Payne and his children are living with an Athe family: M. Athe 50 F VA S. Athe 21 F GTDC J. Payne 35 M coachmaker VA Wm. Payne 15 M student GTDC C. Payne 14 M GTDC J. Payne 12 F GTDC A. Payne 10 M GTDC T. Payne 4 M GTDC E. Payne 2/12 F GTDC John Payne mar. (1) Jane Marcey (spelled Massi) in Washington, DC on 01 Nov 1832. You can find this record on Ancestry.com Washington DC Marriages. Jane died on 11 Jun 1849 according to records at Oak Hill Cemetery in GTDC. Either the census was taken in July 1849 or she actually died in 1850. Either way, John Payne was left a widower with 6 children. John Payne married (2) Virginia F. Torrison in Fauquier Co., VA on 16 Dec 1850. 1860 DC Washington DC (M653_101 p. 44, line 13-21) John Payne 41 M Coach Factory 5000/4000 VA Virginia 31 F VA Charles 22 M Coach painter DC A. Those in the 1850 census missing from the 1860: Eldest son William is aready married to Priscilla Richards Entwistle. Daughter Julia is already married to Franklin Smith. Youngest daughter E. apparently died, though I do not have that documented. The younger three children in the 1860 census are from John's second marriage. 1870 VA Fairfax Falls Church Twp. Crenshaw, 11 MAY 1871, Alexandria Co., p. R49/6" Here Theodore's parents are listed as John and Jane. I hope this has been enough documentation to prove that the parents of Theodore W. Payne who married Anna E. Birch were in fact John and Jane (Marcey/Massi) Payne. The books "Arlington Heritage" and "Falls Church By Fence and Fireside" both have more information. While there are some mistakes in each book, there is also substantiation of the lineage I have presented. If anyone wants to share information on the Payne, Massey/Marcey, Richards, or Birch families, I would be happy to share what I have found. There are many connections between these families going back several generations. Theodore Payne and Anna Birch were second cousins, with Caleb Richards their shared great-grandfather. Brenda Payne Rose PS- I plan to look next time I'm in Arlington to find what records are there. Jacob Payne is probably the brother or son of Ananias, but I don't know yet. In the Fairfax County Road Orders 1749-1800 Ananias and Jacob Payne are always in the same group (which also always includes Caleb Richards). Note: The ad below this is one reason I think it's important to correct any line that has errors. Too much is being passed around on the internet that has mistakes. > > Jumpstart your genealogy with OneWorldTree. Search not only for > ancestors, but entire generations. 1. One of Americas founding fathers is subject of DNA dig
    2. pifox
    3. One of Americas founding fathers is subject of DNA dig The first ever excavation to retrieve DNA from remains in a British church for a scientific project began in June. Archaeologists from Suffolk and the United States had been working carefully to recover a small fragment of the skeleton of Elizabeth Gosnold Tilney, the sister of Captain Bartholomew Gosnold, the Suffolk entrepreneur who led the expedition to establish the first English-speaking colony in the New World and the birthplace of the United States of America. The Grave Shaft of Elizabeth Gosnold Tilney, Bartholomew Gosnold's Sister In 1607, Gosnolds group landed at Jamestown, in what is now Virginia, but died a few months later. He is considered the most overlooked of U.S. founders. The remains of a 17th century captain were uncovered in 2003 by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA Preservation) on Jamestown Island. Backed by the National Geographic Society, the project at Shelley church aims to prove that the captain in Virginia is the USAs Founding Father. Dr William Kelso, the Director of Archaeology for APVA Preservation, has joined a team of archaeologists from Suffolk County Council at Shelley for the dig. A second excavation to recover a DNA sample from Katherine Blackerby, Gosnolds niece who is buried at St Peter and St Mary church in Stowmarket, will also begin shortly. The results of any DNA comparison will be the centerpiece of an episode of Explorer on the National Geographics TV channel later in the year.
