Subject: John Somers From: Grace Upshaw <gu6225@earthlink.net> Date: Thu, 01 Dec 2005 10:55:28 -0600 To: "Harrison, Gene" <EHaris1@Columbus.rr.com> Hello Gene: It is a delight to meet another distant cousin who descends from a brother of my ancestor. I appreciate your kindness in offering to share your valuable records with me. Please let me know cost of copying and postage, plus travel time and I will happily mail you a check. I do have an article concerning old John, published in a historical journal in Alexandria. If you would like for me to copy that for you, I will do so. That is, if I can lay my hands on it. I am not the best researcher or filing person. Thanks for all your help. Let me know about you. Grace

    1. Re: [VAFairfax] Re: Children of "old John Summers"
    2. Have been following all versions of "Old John Summers" family for several years and agree there are many errors, incorrect generations and relationships - even in cited sources. For reference I have them all saved trying to sort out. Who is SETH? - is she Seth Harrison d/o Captain Thomas Harrison?, and the Harrisons have been all mixed up not mention that now. Here is a file posted Rootsweb by charles Heffler that includes very good notes on this same point: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=heffwest&id=I855 HEFFLER-STRONG ALSDORF-PENISTEN Entries: 5289 Updated: 2005-11-18 03:25:11 UTC (Fri) Contact: charles heffler Name: seth "sythia" frances short Surname: short Given Name: seth "sythia" frances Sex: F Birth: 1667 in stafford county, virginia Note: Name: Sythia Elizabeth Short Sex: F Birth: ABT. 1667 in Maryland Death: AFT. 1746 in Virginia Note: Her name was likely Seth Short. From: "Two May Families - of Hollow Square, Greene County, Alabama" by Berenice May Fuller, Getweay Press 1988, page 300, "What these sources do not agree about is the name of his wife. In 'Maryland Genealogies', Vol. I p. 233, (published by Genealogical Pub. Co., 1980), she is designated as Sythia Elizabeth Short. One descendant, Walter Harrison (1863-1955) also names Sythia Short. On the memorial marker in the Harrison Cemetery the name is Sophia C. Short. South Carolina genealogist Leonardo Andrea, using the Index of Wills in Stafford Co., Virginia, shows Wills recorded for Thomas Harrison and his wife Anna. This could be a different Thomas Harrison." [This could also be a second spouse] The will of John West reports that she was "Seith Harrison, the wife of Captain Thomas Harrison", and she received 500 lbs of tobacco to buy a mourning ring. Coincidentally, he also left 1000 lbs of tobacco to "Seith Lucas, the wife of Henry Lucas." Might they have been related? The only other woman known to have had this name were a daughter and three granddaughters of Capt. Thomas Harrison and Seth Linton, the daughter of Moses Linton. The last was a godchild of the Captain's. Harrison called his residence "Retirement," the name assigned by "Old Captain Brent" to his home on Aquia Creek. However, in his own deposition he states that he married the widow of Henry Lucas. John Summers, Henry Lucas, Robert Blake and sons, John and Benjamin Blake, all were tenants of John West and mentioned in his will. John West made a bequest to a Seith Lucas in his will. In jStafford County Deed Book J, Page 36, John Summers, his wife Seth, and son John leased land in 1722 from Thomas Harrison for three lives. The Prince william County Order Book 1754-55, 24 Mar. 1754, has an Administration of John Farrow, dec. granted to John Summers and Elizabeth, his wife. I believe that she may have been Elizabeth Blake, the daughter of Robert Blake, who married first Henry Lucas and then upon his death,m John Summers....This probably doesn't help...From yearbook...Fairfax 1997-98..131 Jodi -----Original Message----- From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com [mailto:gc-gateway@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of gu6225@earthlink.net Sent: Wednesday, November 30, 2005 5:52 PM To: VAFAIRFA-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [VAFairfax] Re: Children of "old John Summers" This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Do you have marriage record for Old John's 1723 marriage to Mary Blake? My ancestor, George Somers, son of old John was born circa 1720, which would make him the son of Sythia Lucas, according to your records. Perhaps he was Sythia's son, but she died and he was reared by Mary Blake. That sounds like a good scenario. I do not have any copies of marriage bonds, etc...would appreciate copies of yours, for which I would happily pay you. Please let me know via this board or by my personal e-mail address. 3. Barbara, Thanks for the update! The home of Lewis Ellzey Turner and Theodosia Payne was also located west of Lexington on what is now known as Fares Farm, a horse farm. Several years ago some distant cousins took pictures of tombstones located on the property. Among the stones were those of Edward Payne and wife Ann Holland Conyers (y instead of g) and Lewis Ellzey Turner and wife Theodosia Payne. My Turners were also members of a/the baptist church. Believe it was called the Forks of Elkhorn Baptist Church. Wonderful to hear that the Thomas Lewis home is being restored! My Turner line goes way back with the Lewis family. I haven't proven it yet but I believe my earliest Turner, Fielding Turner (b. 1706), was married to an Ann Lewis from the Northumberland Co., VA area. He does not appear on the 1900 or later census, so he dies sometime between 1880 and 1900. His wife appears on the 1900 census living with her daughter and her husband in Dranesville. Deniza no longer appears in the census after 1900. She files for a pension with Virginia in 1901. So I'm assuming she dies prior to 1910. Both were born in Fairfax County, so while its an assumption, they're probably buried in Dranesville or at the very least in Fairfax County. Another gentleman emailed me offline saying they are not listed in the master index of Fairfax cemeteries. May have been listed as Colter, but in census and other records the name is spelled correctly. Thanks again for the info. If anyone has other suggestions on where I can look, I'd appreciate the advise. Jonathan Coulter

The church, originally called Liberty Meeting House, was allegedly built using bricks that came from the old Sugarland Chapel (St Timothy's Episcopal Church, FX168). In the 1950's the church is reported to have removed the gravestones, graded the area with a bulldozer, and then replaced the stones in their proper positions. Two trenches, thought to be the mass graves of Confederate casualties from the Battle of Dranesville (Dec. 20, 1861), were noted at the end of the cemetery. There were 40+ headstones, some broken or displaced, and an unknown number of unmarked burials.

But, yoy might also try theKY Census for the time period you are seearc! hing, as William Payne might well be in KY at that time and his papers woul be there possibly??? On p. 103: "Elizabeth Payne descended from a very aristocratic family of Welch and Schotch nobility, who wielded quite an influence in Scotland as far back as the year 1500. the motto on the crest of the Payne family when they fought against the Duke of Normandy at the Battle of Hastings was 'Ready! ah, ready!' Sir Stephen Payne, of St. Christopher's Island, was of an ancient Devonshire family, and was a member of the Council and a supporter of King Charles1st during the civil war; fled from England and settled on the island of St. Christopher. In 1620 Sir Robert Payne's two sons, William and John, emigrated to America. Sir William settled in MD near Leonardstown; Sir John in Fairfax Co., VA, on a grant of land made to them by King James 1st. this grant of land was called "Payne's Manor," and comprised many thousand acres. It is said that the King gave this munificent grant to placate these young and ambitious sprigs of nobility to get them to the new world, because he feared their power and influence in their native land. William Payne, son of Sir Hohn Payne, was born in Fairfax County, VA, August 10 1671. He married for his second wife Anna Jennings, and their children were Edward, William, and Sandford. The eldest son, Edward, m. Lady Ann Holland Congers, who was related to Lord Holland (Duke of Richmond). Eliz. Payne, our great-grandmother, was the eldest daughter of the above-named parents. They were m. in Fairfax Co., VA , Octobeer 27 1773. ..... Col Thomas Lewis removed to Fayette Co., KY, in 1780 with his lovely wife... [this would be the approximate time that Edward Payne and family moved to Fayette Co., KY - I believe] For what it's worth!! Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/SBC.2ACI/641 Message Board Post: Elizabeth Offutt was the widow of Stephen Lewis of Fairfax Co., VA said to have married Captain William Douglas [her second husband] in (or, he was from there) Ayrshire, Scotland before 1761. They [Eliz. and Stephen Lewis] are said to have had five children [according to one source]: Eliz.(1747-) m.Patterson; Thomas(1749-)m.Elizabeth Payne 1773; Jane (1752-)m. William Nielson of Scotland; Sally m. Dr. Shrope, amd Elizabeth m. Smith. I am descended from Thomas Lewis that m. Eliz. Payne. Need more information on Elizabeth Offutt, birth and death dates and places -marriage dates and places. Need more information on Stephen Lewis of Fairfax Co.,VA - birth (VA?) and death dates and places. And where they were both buried. Would be extremely interested in Stephen's relationship to John Lewis the pioneer. Also the parentage of Stephen Lewis and Elizabeth Offutt. I have one source saying that Eliz. Offutt "b.13 JAN 1727/28 in Prince George's County, MD" "Death: 1770 in Loudon Co.,VA" "Father: Samuel Owen Offutt, b. 18 Oct 1710 in Berkeley Co., VA" "Mother: Elizabeth Hite, b. 13JAN 1714/15""Marriage 1 :William Douglas, b. 20MAR 1731/32 in Ayr Scotland. m. 12 JUN 1761" No info on Stephen Lewis??? Does anyone have anything on him? He appears on lists of the church George Washington attended - If it is the same Stephen Lewis. Apparently, he died young. But, how?? in battle?? Who are his parents??? Thanks for any help you might provide. Barbara Flores bbflores@sbcglobal.net
