I just remembered that what is called Fairfax County has shifted around a lot. You may also need to check in Alexandria and Arlington County. They were once Fairfax County also. If LVA doesn't have the will book, one of these two counties and city ought to have it.

Most early Virginia records are stored there. They have a searchable on-line database. If the will book is not there, try the Fairfax County Courthouse. That is where probate records are kept.

Surnames: Stanhope Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/SBC.2ACI/662 Message Board Post: Hello, If someone has access to Fairfax Co. Will Book I-1, I have an inventory for the estate of William Stanhope that references his will being on pages 100-108 of Will Book I-1 (will taken 23-Jan-1802, recorded 19-Apr 1802). If it turns out that the book has only the inventory, I have that already. But the inventory lacks the list of heirs, which I'd like to have. A complete transcription of the will would be nice but is not needed, only the heirs. I can do reciprocal lookups for Clark Co. Indiana, and other nearby areas in the future. Thanks, -doug quebbeman
Along with other recommendations, I highly suggest you contact Susan Gray, Curator of the Fairfax City Museum, at sgray@fairfaxva.gov She will be able to fill you in on all the contacts you need for everything from travel lodging, to the Virginia Room at the Library, and local individuals in the History/Genealogy realm. Many thanks to Carol and Linda for the interesting and helpful replies to my request for suggestions of places to visit in Fairfax County. I can hardly wait to get started. Graham Louer
Allow a day or MORE for the Fairfax Co Library! They have old maps showing land grants superimposed on a current street map. You can copy the pertinent section and use it to drive straight TO where your family owned land 300 years ago! NEAT! They have a good staff and they are very helpful. Just ask! Catherine
Dear Graham, It is cheaper to stay out near Manassas. Check out Expedia.com for Manassas Virginia. They show photo, rate the motels and give prices (start at $69). The closer to DC the more expensive the place will be. For local history books, don't forget the Daughters of the American Revolution Library in DC. You can research for $10 a day.(I think) The Library of Congress and the Archives are other excellent research sites, as you know. The Archives will get you the Civil War records of (at least) Northern soldiers. Another Church to check out. THE FALLS CHURCH at Rt. 7 and Lee Highway is from before 1780. (Google The Falls Church and you get the following.) The first church to be built after it was established by the Colonial General Assembly in 1732 was a wooden building on this site as a part of Truro Parish . It was completed in 1734 by Richard Blackburn on land donated by John Trammell. Until that time, this area was served by clergyman who lived near present-day Quantico, and the nearest church was Occoquan Church near Lorton. The name "The Falls Church" came from its geographical location. Among the very few, widely separated churches in the parish, this church was identified as the one that was "near the falls" of the Potomac River. One of the roads which intersected near the church led to the ferry below the Little Falls. The Falls Church was the name commonly used after 1757. The name Falls Church was adopted by the community which developed around the church, and subsequently by the city when it was incorporated in 1948. Historic Marker Outside the Historic Church on Washington Street In 1762, the wood building was judged to be "greatly in decay". The vestry (the church governing body), meeting at The Falls Church, ordered a new brick building constructed on the same site. In 1763, George Washington and George William Fairfax were appointed church wardens with responsibility to contract for a new building. This was Washington’s last official act on behalf of this church after the parish was divided in 1765 and before work began. After 1765, the seat of Truro Parish, which had been here, returned to the southern part of the county and this church became the seat of the new Fairfax Parish. Work on the new church was begun in 1767 by Colonel James Wren who had designed the building and was a member of the vestry as well. The new building was completed late in the fall of 1769. It is the oldest remaining church building north of Quantico in Virginia. Enjoy. This is an exciting area for research. Hello Graham, I posted this info in Jan. 2005 on the Fairfax list: "I was just reading a local newspaper, The South [Fairfax] County Chronicle, and it has an excellent article about the "Virginia Room" of the Fairfax City Regional Libary. According to this article by Eleanor Gomolinski-Lally (January 2005), the Virginia Room holds a rich collection of regional history, genealogy, local and state government information and legal resources. The collection of historical materials is extensive, including the Fairfax Historical Index, county and military records, federal censuses for Virginia, passenger and immigration lists, rosters of soldiers and indexes to Rev. War and War of 1812 pension files. There's a lot of Civil War history also. The genealogical collection is centered on Virginia but includes other states that Virginians came from or went to, as well as countries they immigrated from. Ancestry Plus, an online genealogical database with links to other important online resources, is available. Library staff can help track down the history of a particular property through old tax records, deeds and wills. In the fall of 2005, construction on a new regional library should begin at Old Lee Highway and North street. The web site is www.co.fairfax.va.us/library or call (703) 293-6383 for information. Hope this helps!" Note: The above library is very close to the old Fairfax County Courthouse at the corner of Chain Bridge Road and Little River Turnpike in Fairfax City. A number I have for the Virginia Room: 703-246-2123. There's an historic church located on Richmond Highway at Telegraph Road -- Pohick Church. It was designed by James Wren and dates to 1774. George Washington, George Mason and Fairfax and Lee family members were among the parishioners of Truro Parish (established in 1732). It's on the National Register of Historic Places. Another older church on the National Register of Historic Places is "Frying Pan Meetinghouse" on Centreville Road, near West Ox Road. It was built in 1791 by a Baptist congregation but in the present day it's owned by Fairfax County Park Authority and only open by appointment. The burial grounds of the meetinghouse are also on the National Register. The numbers of hotels, motels and restaurants in Fairfax County must be astronomical! I know my family has stayed at the Courtyard Marriott and the Springfield Hilton in Springfield, VA. Does anyone on the list have a copy of either book "Index of Virginia Estate Records, 1800-1865., Volume 1" or "Alexandria, Virginia Wills, Administrations and Guardianships, 1786-1800" by Wesley E. Pippenger and would be willing to do a quick lookup for me? Actually any books or advice covering administrations between late 1799-1800 would be welcome. I recently discovered that in the book "English Estate of American Settlers: 1800-1858" by Peter Wilson Coldham it lists... "DENSLEY, Edith, formerly of St. James, Westminster, late of Alexandria, Virginia. Administration to Joseph Hume, attorney for husband John BOGUE (sic). (Mar. 1800)." (note - I have contacted National Archives in the UK and was told they do not have a will listed - the item appears to be an administration record which they would have to locate and offered me several options). I have documented that Edith DENSLEY married John BOGUE 1789 at St. Martin in the Fields, England; they immigrated to Virginia in 1795; and Edith/Judith Densely/Bogue died Sept. 3, 1799 in Alexandria. I am assuming that if administration records were filed in England that documentation would also have existed in Virginia where her husband lived - eventually remarrying and moving to Loudoun Co. VA. Thank you for any help or direction you are able to offer, Susan McIntyre
