The Col. William Payne (and also a "real" military Colonel}who was pall bearer at GW's funeral was the son of Wlliam Payne {who was never in the military but was given the honorary title of Colonel and awarded 50,000 acres in Kentucky for his efforts in supporting the War of the Revolution} who was among other things, Vestry of Truro Parish, Sheriff of Faifax County and Chief Justice of Fairfax County and had the described encounter with GW. For more details I would refer you to "The Paynes of Virginia". If you can't find it, I will be happy to send you a family tree with the correct vital statistics. Wm Payne, the elder, was my 6th Ggrandfather. Hello Folks, Anyone on this list researching a Mr. and Mrs. John Wesley, Fairfax County, Virginia? They are found in the 1880, Fairfax County, Virginia Census. They have listed on the census card: Horace Daniels, male, age approximately 6 years old. There was a note on the census card that said, "Not Adopted." Please let me know, if anyone is familiar with this family and if he was a minister. Thank you, Helen West --------------------------------- Yahoo! Messenger with Voice. Is this perhaps the Edward Payne who is discussed in The Paynes of Virginia on pages 235-238? He was a prominent member of the community - vestryman, Justice, church warden, sheriff, etc. b. 18 Nov 1726 in Westmoreland Co.; married Anne Holland Conyers 27 Feb 1749/50 in Overwharton Parish Stafford Co; d. 17 May 1806 in Fayette Co., KY. Lived in Prince William Co. a few miles south of what is now Fairfax Court House, which in 1742 became a part of Fairfax Co. Bought and sold land fairly often over the years. 1772 and 1777 he bought land in Loudoun Co. though continuing to reside in Fairfax Co. 1778 he and his wife deeded to their son Henry the land in Loudoun Co. that they bought in 1772. 1785 he and his wife sold... to Coleman Brown 206 ac. in Loudoun. He and his family at once moved to Kentucky. I don't know if this could be the same person or not. I only have ever seen one Edward Payne listed in the early Fairfax tax records, though. In 1782 he's in the list of John Gibson and a Sampson Turley is in the same list (only Turley I see in the entire county). In 1785 Edward Payne is in the Fairfax tax list of William Payne (his brother, I believe). I did not find any Turleys in this list. I know this Edward is frequently mentioned in the Fairfax Co. Road Order book also. Hope this helps, Brenda Payne Rose
While we are on subject of Payne in Fairfax, who might this Edward be for certain in the following deed? My interest is in "Johnymoore creek" land and Turley relationships. Edward Payne purchased 45 acres prior to 1777 from John Turley March 17, 1777 purchased 110 acres from Ignatius Turley and Rachel wife John Waugh of Stafford County (John Waugh. Jrs.) by his last will and testament November 6, 1742 devised unto John and Thomas Monk his lnds in Prince William County lying on the branches and runs of Popeshead and Johnnymore. Thomas Monk and Margaret his wife sold 8 September 1762 to Paul Turley 450 acres. Paul Turley devised unto his sons Ignatius, John and Paul. Ignatius Turley and Rachel his wife sold 110 acres 17 March 1777 to Edward Payne. Sarah Turley, widow of Paul, and John and Paul Turley sold 24 March 1777 to Alexander Henderson for 295 pounds current money of Virginia 295 acres. John Turley had sold 45 acres to Edward Payne before 24 march 1777. (Fairfax Deeds M:290 and L:243)
