THE HISTORY OF TRURO PARISH IN VIRGINIA BY REV. PHILIP SLAUGHTER, D.D. Edited With Notes and Addenda By REV. EDWARD L. GOODWIN Historiographer of the Diocese of Virginia If you cannot find this book in your local library or cannot borrow a copy from a lending library, you may want to go to http:// www.dmkheritage.com/ They have it on a CD. This 183 page book, including index, written in 1907 contains information about Truro Parish which was part of the Northern Neck Grants. "Within this territory were the seats of the Fairfaxes, Washingtons, Masons, McCartys, Fitzhughs, Brents, Alexanders, Lewises, Mercers, Daniels, Carters, Dades, Stuarts, Corbins, Tayloes, Steptoes, Newtons, Browns, Lees, Thorntons, Balls, Smiths, and other leading families too many to mention, who dispensed an elegant hospitality at Northumberland House, Nomini, Stratford, Chantilly, Mount Airy, Sabine Hall, Bedford, Albion, Cedar Grove, Boscobel, Richland, Marleborough, Woodstock, Gunston, Belvoir, Woodlawn, Mount Vernon, etc. Beginning at Lancaster, county was taken from county, Parish from Parish, as the population of each passed the frontiers, until in 1730 Prince William was taken from Stafford and King George Counties, above Chappawansick Creek and Deep Run, and along the Potomac, to the "Great Mountains." This became also Hamilton Parish; which Parish, by an Act of the General Assembly passed at the Session of May, 1732, to take effect the first of the following November, was divided into two Parishes "By the river Ockoquan, and the Bull Run, (a branch thereof,) and a course from thence to the Indian Thoroughfare of the Blue Ridge of Mountains," (Ashby's Gap.) All that part of Prince William lying below the said bounds was to retain the name of Hamilton, "And all that other part of the said county, which lies above those bounds, shall hereafter be called and known by the name of Truro." The Parish was named after the Parish in Cornwall, in England, which is now the Diocese of Truro." Tenleytown (also known as Tenallytown and Tennellytown) dates from the 1700s, a farming and artisan community providing the green groceries, dairy products and tradesmen for much of the city. Tenleytown was centered around and named for its well known Tenally Tavern which was owned and operated by the Tenally family and located at the toll stop on the Road to Frederick. Tenleytown is the second oldest community (after Georgetown) incorporated into the District of Columbia. Many of the prominent citizens of Tenleytown were the founders, builders and members of the Methodist Cemetery and the Mt. Zion/Eldbrooke Methodist Church. Tenleytown played a crucial role (highest point in the city - Fort Reno) of protecting Washington during the Civil War Nearby Camp Frieze utilized the Methodist Cemetery and Mt. Zion/Eldbrooke Methodist Church (which were almost as high an elevation) as a military headquarters, fort, campsite, barracks, and hospital where troops from Rhode Island a! nd New York were stationed -- destroying the church building and some tombstones. (See "Tenleytown, D.C.: Country Village into City Neighborhood" (ISBN: 0960698604) by Judith Beck Helm. In 2005, Metropolitan Memorial and Eldbrooke United Methodist Churches joined to become the Greater Metropolitan Parish of Washington, DC; and in 2006 the 166-year-old Eldbrooke United Methodist Church was closed. Negotiations are now ongoing to build on the present site of the Eldbrooke United Methodist Church; and the Cemetery Association has been approached about incorporating their floor area ratio (FAR) density rights into the Eldbrooke Church site building package. Again, the Methodist Cemetery Association urges your participation. Interested parties should contact: President, Audrey Schwartz, 301 946-3056; AudreySch930@aol.com

Hello Mickey, I saw your 1860 query, for Joseph. You know Grandfather, was in the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Wesley in the 1880 Fairfax County, VA Census. He was listed as 6 years old and "not adopted." Now through my query to this mailing list asking if anyone knew if John Wesley was a minister, someone answered: "Historical newspaper search: Number of matches: 1Search page number: 1 Newspaper Date Page Subject Alexandria Gazette 3/26/1861 02 Wesley John Receives church appointment. " We all know the name of England's John Wesley, he was involved in the start of the Methodists Movement. The Virginia John Wesley, could have been a descendant of the John Wesley. He was a minister and I'd like to find Methodist Church Records for him. Many minister or their wives kept diaries. Anyway, my point in all of this is that Indian children were sometimes stolen, or worse to be given indoctrination in Christianity. They were also needed to do farm work because the Civil War had disrupted slavery, with no farm help to be had. It also disrupted everything in Indian Territory. The Supreme court, as well as lesser Federal Courts did not uphold Indian Sovereignty. There is a Choctaw Indian by the name of Joe Daniels, that was held at Ft. Smith Arkansas. He would have been about the age of Horse's father. There was a band of Choctaw that settled there after 1850, because of the whites coming into Indian Territory and stealing the land. The information on him is at the Southwest U.S. NARA site where they keep Indian Records. I have always wanted to purchase a copy. Are you interested in them? Let me know and I will order them. I hope you and your family are well. I'll give you my address and telephone again. Is you address and telephone the same? In fact if you could send them again. I've lost my telephone & address book. Thanks for offering to do a look up. I have part of the info from the 1860 Fairfax County Census for John Daniel & wife Julia A. & children. I need the dwelling number, date & enumerator's name and if it shows where in Fairfax they resided. I gathered this info early on in my research and Murphy's Law set in! Their oldest son Joseph was not listed with them in the census so could you tell me if there is a marriage listed in your source for Joseph Daniel/Daniels to a (given name unk) Dove or Green? Thanks so much in advance, Mickey
