The archives are mounting to be a formidable record for future generations. Hope you enjoyed the new Web Page. I anticipate adding a picture of Gerry and your Mayor of Fairfax at the Book Launch in York last month. Gerry is trying to trace a story about the Pell family in which you may be able to help. The only clue is a title - "Pell, the Pig Murder". Does this ring a bell with you ? Unfortunately no dates to help trace the story. Look forward to your comments. Best wishes, John

I too am related to Thomas Lucas of Fairfax Co., Va. He is my 5th great grandfather and I also have a copy of his will, however, I have never been able to prove the name of his wife. Some say her last name was Eleanor Powell and she was born abt. 1724 and died bef. Sept. 21, 1795 in Fairfax, VA. Can anyone prove or disprove this? His will refers to her as Elener. Also does anyone know his exact date of death for Thomas or who his parents were. Thanks for the reply, Margaret! Since posting my message, I have sent for and received a copy of the Will of Thomas Lucas Sr. However, it appears that the list of his heirs is not complete. According to research of Mary Sapp, it would appear that there were at least eight or nine children of Thomas Sr. and Eleanor. I have been trying to learn if they also had a son William, born November 9, 1755. He was Revolutionary Soldier, and according to his declaration he resided in Fairfax County at the time that he enlisted in the Virginia Continental Line in 1774/75. I would surely appreciate any light which you might shed on this matter. Sincerely, Lucas James

James Clark Anderson was the son of Charles Anderson that served in the Virginia Continental Line during the Revolutionary War. His family was Scotch-Irish and settled in the Augusta, Virginia area. This article also refers to a John Anderson that had 4 sons: Robert, James, Andrew, and William and all four were Revolutionary Officers. Robert served as a Colonel in South Carolina, while the others were Captains in the Virginia Line. James Clark Anderson and his brother (unamed) ran away from home stopping in North Carolina where James learned the tanner's trade and his brother learned he hatter's trade. Would someone be so kind as to do a orbit lookup for me on Rachel Melinda Hughes Everhart. She was born 18 Aug 1917 and died 21 Nov 1967. She is buried in Fairfax, VA. Her husband was Derward S. Everhart. Thank you for your time.
Terry, No one in my line knows anything farther than our John Gray who was born about 1717 and died in 1783 in Fairfax County, Va. There is some speculation that he was from Wales, but it's pure speculation. Thank much for you offer to help. John
Hello, I just posted an old advertisement for "fashionable hats" by Samuel D. Harper, whose factory was located on Fairfax Street in Alexandria. This was scanned from an original issue of the Alexandria Herald newspaper, and you can see it online here: http://theoldentimes.com/samharp13ffx.html I hope it's of interest! Hello, I just posted an old advertisement that was placed by H. TOLER, who was selling a plantation called "Rose Hill." Mr. TOLER stated that it was situated near Alexandria, on the Colchester Road. It's very descriptive of the property. Because this is scanned from an original issue of the Alexandria Herald, and the ad is long, I've broken it up into 3 pages for ease of loading. You can see it online here: http://theoldentimes.com/toler13ffx.html I hope it's of interest! Barbara http://theoldentimes.com
I don't believe that there is much info on Belhaven as distinct from Alexandria. The two names were apparently rival alternatives at the time of the town's founding. Alexandria obviously won out, and it was probably proposed to curry favor with the Alexander family, which owned most of the land upon which the town was founded. The Alexanders did not support the establishment of the town, but the House of Burgesses chartered the town nonetheless. Perhaps because of this or because of the sympathies of the local Scottish element, the Belhaven name persisted for at least a few years. "Belhaven" was probably the preference of the Scottish portion of the town's founders. It was apparently bestowed in honor of John Lord Hamilton, the Baron of Belhaven, a Scottish critic of the 1707 Act of Union and of the prerogatives of the Church of England (Alexandria was founded only four years after "the Forty-Five," Jacobite Rebellion or Stuart Rising; there were still frictions between Scots and English). The name lives on, in altered form, as Belle Haven, a mid 20th-century subdivision just south of Alexandria. The Scottish merchants petitioned the House of Burgesses to have the name of the town changed to Belhaven and were denied in 1752. The Belhaven name appears, of course, on George Washington's "Plan of Alexandria, now Belhaven" of 1749 and on the Fry and Jefferson map of 1750-1755. There is little evidence that the name persisted beyond this time. The name does appear on the John Henry 1770 Virginia counties map, but this is probably due to the influence of the popular Fry and Jefferson map. The Landmark Ridge is an 18-story apartment building built in 1974. I have no access to a photo of the building; I live on the other side of the city. The area around Landmark Mall is generally known as "Landmark" and was relatively undeveloped before the 1970s. It was part of Fairfax County until the early 1950s.
