The village was originally known as the Town of Providence. The magisterial District in which the historic old county seat is located is still known by the name of Providence, but an old newspaper Dated October 30, 1852, while styled "The Firfax News" carried the statement that it was published every Saturday morning at Providence, Virginia. The Editor and proprieter was E Hughes. Hiram Brown was the publisher and the issue now preserved in the old newspaper section of the Library of Congress carried the legend: Vol. 4 No 10, indicating that the paper had been established in 1848. The make up of the paper, its clear impression and standard width columns would do credit to a modern publication. Its four pages carry six columns each of interesting reading matter and it is well stocked with advertisements, especially from the City of Alexandria. The editorial records and death of Daniel Webster and quotes an eloquent eulogy from the Baltimore Sun. One of the leading news articles deals with the annual exhibition conducted by the Fairfax Agricultural Society, the officers of which are named and a list of prize winners denotes the progressive agriculturilists of that amiable period of Fairfax County's long and eventful history. The exhibition was held in the Courthouse on October 16 and 17, 1852, and the following exihibitors were awarded prizes on their respective exhibits: William Swink, ruben Kelsey, Dr. W P Gunnell, Chas Kirby, Chas. Dan ============ -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, August 13, 2001 5:50 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Mary Fairfax Hi! You are one of the Fairfax experts, and I wonder if you are familiar with the Mary Fairfax who married either Joseph Berry of King George Co., VA or Willliam Warder of Charles Co., MD. The only evidence I have of the latter is the fact that his will was witnessed by Elizabeth Fairfax and William Fairfax, who happened to be siblings of Mary Fairfax. Second, the John Thomson to you email of the Joseph Foster 1874 chart shows John Fairfax who married Catherine Norris was a child of Thomas Fairfax and Anna Conyers, while others show John as the possible descendant of Henry Fairfax, son of Thomas and Ellen Aske? I estimate that about 1/3 to 1/2 of all the lines shown in the fan chart of my mothers family inherited by me from my aunt end in a "think" not "know" way. So far, I have succeeded in showing with some degree of knowledge the descendants of Ann Warder (daughter of William Warder and Mary Fairfax?) and Matthew Milstead, with the help of a number of Milstead people. I also was able to follow the ancestors of Sally Fendall Bell who married Henry Milstead to Roger Mallory. I was proud of that because that aunt and my mother looked all their lifes for Sally's ancestors without success. But there are so many for which we know little, such as the Fairfax questions which I raised. Usually, somewhere, the information is there, so I bug everyone in sight, like you, to try to find it. I am looking for information on surname Mankin. My great grandmother's first husbands name was John Mankin. He died from TB in the 1860s and is burried in a Methodist Church Cemetary in Alexandria. I can't seem to locate the actual whereabouts of this cemetary. I am planning a trip to the DC/Northern Virginia area in October and would like to be able to visit this grave site to obtain photos of the gravestones. Can anyone please help me? Thanks in advance Stevan [email protected]
Stevan, You will find the web page for the Survey of Fairfax Co. Cemeteries at <http://www.co.fairfax.va.us/library/virginia/varoom/Cemsurv.htm>. The author is Brian Conley, who works in the Virginia Room of the Fairfax Regional Library on Chain Bridge Road, at 703-246-2123. I have always found him to be immensely helpful. Looking quickly at the online index of this survey, I don't see a Methodist church cemetery in Alexandria, but Brian or one of his fellow librarians at the Virginia Room would know best where to direct you in your search. In terms of legal jurisdiction, I believe Alexandria is not within Fairfax County, being an independent city. Nonetheless, there are other cemeteries in Alexandria listed in the survey. Good luck.
