If you live in the area and want to join us, the Town Council meeting regarding this will be Tuesday night, 5/28, at 7:00 P.M. in the Board of Supervisors room at 302 N. Main Street, Culpeper. The Culpeper Town Council owns the cemetery and is charged with the responsibility for perpetual care. HOWEVER, it is going to rack and ruin because NOTHING has been done except mowing and trimming for years. Headstones are falling over; stone tablets are sinking into the ground, other stones are deteriorating & crumbling. The oldest sections of the cemetery -- those belonging to Antioch Baptist Church, the oldest African-American church in the county, and the IOOF (Oddfellows)-- are in the worst shape. Several of us have decided to join forces with Priscilla to see that this valuable aspect of Culpeper's history is not lost because of inertia on the part of Town Council. In 1984 the Town was given a list of damaged and displaced stones in greatest need of repair. There were 164 names. Nothing was done, and in 1995 the number had increased to almost 190. Still nothing has been done. Although some time ago the Council has said an effort would be made to contact owners or descendants of owners of lots in the cemetery, this has not begun to date. In the draft budget for fiscal year 2003 there is $10,000. allocated for consulting fees to formulate "an old headstone repair policy" but only $3,000.00 for actual repairs/restoration. How hard is it to look at the stones and decide to repair the ones in the worst condition first? It would also help if you would write to Town Council and express to them how appalled you are at conditions there.
