    1. [VACULPEP] Lesson for today
    2. While we are at this business of genealogy we have an excellent opportunity to improve our use of the English language. One of the common errors observed deals with the use of "who" and "that." Test- When one is referring to a person the correct expression is which of the following? Mary, daughter of Hugh JONES, THAT married Thomas HICKS was mother of three children. or Mary, daughter of Hugh JONES, WHO married Thomas HICKS was mother of three children. If you don't know, it is the latter. Best, Hugh

    3. There are a couple of tricks you can use to remember when to use "that" or "who." Would you ever say "THAT married Hugh Jones."? Or would you say "WHO married Hugh Jones?"? The latter, of course, would be correct and probably no one ever would make a mistake between the use of the two pronouns in this case. Another hint is to remember that WHO is used for people not things. Example: "The chair that sat in the corner of our living room had been my father's favorite." Again, probably no one would ever use WHO to refer to a chair. I'm a retired English teacher; I've got a million of 'em!!! Sally
