    3. Hi, Listers, Mary Stevens Jones >a retired newspaper writer and a former English teacher, >holds a B.A. degree from Westhampton College of the University of Richmond. >Co-editor of Historic Culpeper published in 1972 by the Culpeper Historical >Society, she resides in Culpeper. She is vice-chairman of Culpeper County's >American Bicentennial Commission. > Mary Stevens died at least 20 years ago.... I wish I could talk to her now....she and her sister Mildred were very involved in history and genealogy and did lots of work for the Historical Society, as well as inventorying cemeteries. Mildred taught high school English here for many, many years...hundreds of us passed through the door to her classroom. By the time we moved to Culpeper (1955), Mary Stevens was a highly respected newspaper writer of the highest caliber. We sorely need someone like her writing for our papers now. BTW, Culpeper has now added a 3rd paper to its repertoire: the Culpeper Citizen. It is published on Thursdays and distributed FREE countywide. It is NOT published by the syndicate based in Tampa that owns the Culpeper Star-Exponent and the Culpeper News. It has its own website, too, as do the others. Check it out. Those of you who are interested in local color for your family histories will find it interesting to compare and contrast them. Daniel Boone did indeed live here for a time. To check whether he was a member of the House of Burgesses, one could consult the Library of Virginia archives and/or the William & Mary Quarterly Journal, to begin with. Richard Mentor Johnson was the running mate of Martin Van Buren. They served from 1837-1841. Regards, Donna S. Boyd Donna
