    1. [VACulpeper] Benjamin HUFFMAN of Culpeper Co., VA
    2. There are as many as four different Benjamin HUFFMANs who lived in Culpeper Co., VA before the RW. Two of these died before 1830. We find Benjamin, b. c1763, s/o Hillman HUFFMAN, in tax records up to 1804. He is next found in Fayette Co., KY 1810, Hardin Co., KY in 1820, and Greene Co., IL in 1830. Thereafter he disappears. In 1832 in Madison Co., VA (created from Culpeper Co. in 1794) a Benjamin provided an affidavit to pension applications of TANNER and TAYLOR. In 1846 a Benjamin HUFFMAN is a witness to the RW service of Martin DEER. In this Madison Co., VA record Benjamin HUFFMAN and Martin DEER are determined to have been born in 1757. >From this information we potentially have two Benjamins with RW service who lived at least to 1830-- Benjamin, b. 1757 Benjamin, b c1763 It is possible that they are the same person. For this to be true, Benjamin (c1763) would have to have come from IL to VA after 1830 and before 1834. The 1763 estimated dob of Benjamin was made by Dr. Holtzclaw in Germanna Reco rd #5 based on tax records of Benjamin's father, Tillman HUFFMAN. One other bit of information may play a part in this saga. Benjamin while in KY was in 1826 correspondence with an attorney in Culpeper Co., VA regarding the estate of his father, Tillman who had recent died. To resolve the estate matter Benjamin may have returned to VA. At this point this is speculation. The Benjamin HUFFMAN, b. 1757, was an 1846 petition witness to RS of Martin DEER of Madison Co., VA. Since this Benjamin was in Madison Co., VA in 1846 he probably was in the county or Culpeper Co., VA before that date. Since there is no 1840 census record of Benjamin HUFFMAN in Madison Co., VA or Culpeper Co., VA, I would like to take a look at county tax records for the years 1833-1846 Does anyone have access to such records? Best regards, Hugh
