I have been researching John Davis the Revolutionary War soldier who moved from Culpeper Co, VA to Elbert Co, GA, because I believe he may be the John Davis listed as executor of the 1796 will of my ancestor Benjamin Davis. John was born 1754 in King William Co, VA and was living in Culpeper when he enlisted in the Revolution in 1777 (age 23). I've found that one significant piece of information which generally appears on internet files for John is in error. John did not marry and live in Amherst Co, VA after the war. In his Revolutionary War soldiers' pension application John states that after the war he lived in Culpeper until moving to Elbert Co, Georgia--it's one of the questions they were specifically asked in the application. (There was another John Davis who did live in Amherst Co, VA, but he moved to KY abt 1798.) So I think this has bearing on who John married. In 1783 in Culpeper Co. there was Edward HAM and James HAM, and I think they lived in the same tax district as this JOHN DAVIS. Then there's this Culpeper marriage you mention between a JOHN DAVIS and FRANCES HAM on 20 May 1787. Although the DAR lists John the Rev soldier's wife's name as Sally (and some others have added surname Ham with no explanation), I think it is possible that it is this JOHN DAVIS who married FRANCES HAM (possibly one of two wives). John had a daughter FRANCES, born about 1795 (since she is said to have married Ansel Burden 14 Sept 1815). John's son John DAVIS Jr. married Lucy HAM, who was the daughter of Reuben HAM, also of Culpeper Co. who also moved to Elbert Co. GA. (Again, there was a Sally Ham in Amherst Co after the war, but she married a Turner and moved to KY.) Probably Reuben HAM and Frances HAM (and Stephen HAM who moved VA>KY) were siblings or at least cousins--some files say that Reuben and Stephen were brothers, sons of Edward HAM. I'm thinking that John's wife name as Sallie/Sarah may have come from a deed. If such a deed were found, we might get an indication of if/when he was married to Sallie. But the evidence seems to me pretty good that it's this John who married Frances Ham. Let me know what you think -- would be glad for any information you have. --Joan ([email protected])
