    3. Joe, No, I do not ever recall seeing any information concerning your "Vincent" Lake, but I do find a Lake family listed with leased land in The Manor of Leeds circa 1790-92. I found this listing in a book titled "The Fairfax Proprietary" and authored by Josiah Look Dickenson. Snip> Page EIGHT INDEX TO LEASES "Map No.", (Map Number), indicates position of lease on Map of Manors, accompanying this book. The Counties from which these records came are abbreviated as follows: Fauquier, Fau.; Frederick, Fr.; Loudoun, L.; Shenandoah, S. Deed book and Page number are abbreviated, DB. and P.; the Year of the Lease as Yr. Leases prior to the year 1786 were made by Thomas, Lord Fairfax; until the year 1793 by the Rev. Denny Martin, with Thomas Bryan Martin as agent, after 1806 by some member of the Marshall syndicate. The secondary "Lives" in the leases are indicated by the first letter of the relationship (where given), as: s for son, b for brother, s for sister, c for child or children. As will be seen, the limit of 3 lives was sometimes exceeded. Snip> Page TWELVE INDEX TO LEASES Map No. 280 Lake, James, Spencer & George , s's., Fau., 10-331-1790 281 Lake, James, George,s., &Thomas, b. Fau. 11-144-1792 Looks like this James Lake property was approximately 2 miles north east of Chester's Gap and just about 1 mile north east (045 degrees) of the head springs of the Rappahannock River in present day Fauquier County, per Eugene Scheel's Fauquier County Map. So......Joe, put your boots on and head on up to Chester's Gap and take the Appalachian Trail in a north east direction and hike in approximately 2 miles and you should be standing on the James Lake, 1790-2 Manor of Leeds property. So Joe...please keep us posted on your future findings and adventures. I'm not conversant with the Elzear/Triplett matter, but your comment that you had used Deed Mapper in the Chesters Gap area immediately caught my attention. My ancestor, Vincent Lake died c1813 somewhere close to Chesters Gap, on the southeast side in what was then Culpeper Co (now Rappahannock). He moved from leased land over on Goose Creek in Fauquier Co. probably c1800 to then Culpeper. He was probably leasing in Culpeper Co also, and I have never found any reference to him in Culpeper other than the US 1810 Census and Tax Lists. Some of his other descendants are found in (now) Rappahannock Co. But to get to the point. In pursuing your Chesters Gap deed mapping activity do you recall having seen the name Vincent Lake ? If so, I would be deeply obliged to know the details. I have walked over parts of Chesters Gap, including the headwaters of the Rappahannock River. At that point it is just a mountain rivulet .... you can "hop" across the width of the stream. Obliged, Joe Lake. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message -- No virus found in this incoming message. 1. Re: [VACULPEP] VINCENT LAKE 1813 (Elzear-Triplett)
    2. Mark .... thanks very much for the maps. Great maps !!!!! Haven't had a chance to go over them in detail but I will do that shortly. Some of Vincents relatives were in Happy Creek Hollow (just "downhill" from the old US Cavalry Remount post on the south side of US Hiway 522, on the west upslope to Chesters Gap) in the 1820 Census and it looked like that area will be in one of your maps. James Lake was a nephew of Vincent Lake, and I was fortunate enough to once see the map which originally accompanied the copies of Dickensons "The Fairfax Proprietary". A useful map if you haven't seen it, & I assume there may still be some copies around in a few archives. I haven't located it physically but the James Lake land must have been near the top of the Blue Ridge. A local man who operated an orchard on the east downslope of the Blue Ridge, near Little Washington once told me (c1997) that all of the small mountains in the area were once farmed to their very tops, and that the tree cover now on those mountains is "second growth". Since Vincent didn't own property as best I can determine, I knew my question to you was a long shot bit I "had to ask". Thanks again for the great maps !
