My Grandfather was Bert Alvin Payton b 1872 in Union Co., IA. His parents were James & Paulina J Dix Payton. Both of them were b in Louisa Co., IA, James in 1844. James parents were John & Catherine Slaughter Payton/Peyton. John was b abt 1815 in Virginia. Catherine was the daughter of Richard & Frances Cash Slaughter. John & Catherine were married in 1832 in Kanawha Co., VA (now WV). In 1840 they were all living in Louisa Co., IA, but John disappeared before 1850. The children of John and Catherine were: William b 1838 Richard b 1840 Frances b 1842 James M b 1844 John b 1848 William and Richard were both killed in the Civil War. James served, but survived. According to James Civil War records, his father died when he was 6 yrs old, but I have found NO records to verify this. Perhaps he went to CA for the goldrush?? Maybe he left and went back to VA?? Maybe he did die & no kind of records (cemetary, death, will, probate, etc)?? I have been stuck in this same place for over 30 years. If anyone has any connection or can help in any way, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
