    3. To clear up a few of the grosser musings published & republished ad infinitum re: the Clayton family of Culpeper, Go to Google Book Search: http://books.google.com/ Input: Selden's and Allied Families Scroll down list of families to Clayton Family (p451). [I only wish this had been available online before I spent eons sorting it out tracking down the actual Wills & deeds & what dates I could, but alas it was 2007 when Vol II was digitalized and I tripped over it this year. I don't vouch for the whole book, but the Clayton chapter was done by Torrence who had major access to actual Wills, deeds, etc. when he moved from Georgia to the family stomping grounds later in life. I did find to my amateur delight - we agree on the Elizabeth (Clayton) Anderson Pendleton business] Rev. William Clayton Torrence, (1884-1953) a lineal descendant of the Lt. Philip Clayton 1746-1807Georgia who m. Mildred Dixon, son of the Sam b. abt 1715 d. 1782 in Frederick County, Va.& wife Susannah, clears up a good deal of the goobledegook on the Clayton family in Rev. Slaughter's book & Green's repetition of it. (Even tho they all left out the wayward son, my Samljrjr who m. Catherine Price in 1786 and removed to Kentucky by Oct 1792, son of Sam & Ann (& brother to Ann C. "Nancy" who married Jeremiah Strother, Philip who m. Ann Swann Churchill (their son Philip Samuel Clayton b. 10 May 1809 is the one married the Conway girl., Marianne), Robert Coleman, Thomas who m. Sarah Cunningham & Geo. who m. Eliz. Broadus Gaines). I think that's everyone. [Elizabeth (Clayton) Anderson Pendleton b. abt 1714 m. Nathaniel Pendleton 1715-1793, the signer, 14 Oct 1744. If she were the daughter of Philip who m. Ann Coleman 18 Aug 1736, she'd be 7 years old at best in 1744... This is comparable to their father Sam christened 1686 in Va. who m. Elizabeth Pendleton in Va., descending from John the Atty-General whose son John the botanist was being chistened the same year in Fulham, Middlesex, England, neither of whom having ever set foot upon Virginia soil until 1705... Not all that long after their father died in 1735, Elizabeth was the executrix of her deceased husband Joseph Anderson's Will (Essex 1743). She was the sister of Philip 1712 (or 1702 if you prefer) d. 1786 Culpeper; the Philip, who had only three (3) children as stated in his will: 1.Lucy m. Wm Williams, 2.Sam m. his cousin Ann Coleman, and 3. Susannah m. Col. James Slaughter; (The Crittenden business has simply got to be a family myth as you can trace the ancestry of John Jay with dates and there are no Clayton daughters of anybody involved.) Elizabeth is mentioned as "Elizabeth Anderson" in their father Sam's Will written 1734 p. Tapp Court, Essex 19 Aug 1735. So we can connect the dots. They had a kid Nathaniel, jr. 1746-1821 who m. Susan Bard and was the Nathaniel 2nd to Alexander Hamilton in his duel with Aaron Burr.] As to the Saml Clayton jr, who in the bk "Baltimore, Its history & Its People" pub. 1912 NY, (purported to be the son of my Sam Clayton & cousin Ann Coleman) marrying a Harriet_______?, and supposedly being the father of a Philip b. 1780 Culpeper who m. Mary Brewer of Annapolis... I'm guessing, if this Philip son of a Sam Clayton was actually born in Culpeper ~ this Sam must have been the son of iii. John Clayton b. est 1717 who married Mary Fargeson 25 Mar 1740; John being another son of Sam Clayton d. 1735 in Tappahannock, Essex County, Virginia. In Mary's father Samuel Fargeson's 1772 Will Culpeper, he mentions his grandsons of his deceased daughter Mary: "Samuel, George, and Philip Clayton". My only hope to clear this one up seems to be a descendant of John Clayton & Mary Fargeson stumbling over the Culpeper list. Just in case my email address changes in the interim, until I croak I do intend to keep that free one: CynthiaClaytonroberts@juno.com active. Thanks to everyone who tried to help.
