First was a major waterway running across central Culpeper county starting in west-vicinity of New Salem Church on Sperryville Turnpike (Rt 522) and running east to the Hazel River south of Ryland. The second was a very short Muddy run which runs into the Rappahannock River (near Kelly's Ford - southeast part of county). White oaks probably refers to just that--a border marked by large white oak tree(s), which probably do not exist anymore. There is a White Oak Church & White Oak Run in the southwest part of the county - not near either of these Muddy Run... If you have not located your old family farm yet, your best bet would be to find your Cummins family on other deeds with other landmarks OR on the census records of that time and those other families mentioned next (above/below) to Cummins - would be his neighbors, which might help you to pinpoint the l! ocation from their deeds. The long Muddy Run crosses alot of roads, and there had to be more than one Muddy Run bridge-no matter how primitive. Even the short Muddy Run crosses 3 roads. Mr. Scheel does not mention a Muddy Run Bridge, nor any mention of the Cummins family on his Historic Map, but you might narrow or pinpoint the location from neighboring families or landmarks located on this map. Let me know if you can do so in the future... I am John Starke, whose many ancestral & related families lived along the Hazel River area north and west of Ryland.
