    1. Re: [VACULPEP] Blackwell Family
    2. Hi All, Recent discovery uncovers the name of Mahala BLACKWELL (born abt 1810, VA -- died betw the census of 1870 and 1880, probably St. Mary's, Adams Co., IN). This Mahala married (we believe) Charles Daniel GAUNT (used the name Daniel). We believe he is the s/o Andrew GAUNT (abt 1766, Culpeper Co., VA -- abt 6/1850, Rappahannock Co., VA) and Catherine CORBIN (1768, Culpeper Co., VA -- 1844, Rappahannock Co., VA). The Census info for 1850 Walnut, Fairfield Co., Ohio shows Daniel GANTZ 50 yrs., VA farmer; Mahala GANTZ 39 yrs VA; Francis GANTZ male 17 yrs., Ohio; Margaret GANTZ 15 yrs., Ohio; Mary Ellen GANTZ 13 yrs., Ohio; Lafayette GANTZ 10 yrs Ohio; Meridith GANTZ male 8 yrs Ohio; Emma E. GANTZ 5 yrs. Ohio; John H. GANTZ 2 yrs. Ohio The youngest child, Auora was born abt 1853 in Adams Co., Indiana. Family information says Daniel came to Adams Co., IN with his family (after the 1850 Census and before 1853). The Census for 1860; St. Mary's, Adams Co., IN shows Mahala (fm) 49 yrs., VA h/h Lafayette GAUNT 20 yrs., Ohio farmer Meredith GANT m 17 yrs Ohio Emeliza GAUNT 15 yrs. Ohio John H. GAUNT 12 yrs., Ohio Auora GAUNT 7 yrs. IN Previous information showed Charles D. GAUNT married to Rachael LILLARD 1824, Culpeper Co., VA. The name BLACKWELL comes from Family Bible information. I have never been able to identify Rachael LILLARD. This is a fact that connects Daniel GAUNT/GANTZ/GANT and Mahala with the Charles Daniel GAUNT s/o Andrews GAUNT and Catherine CORBIN of Culpeper Co., VA; The following is from KENTUCKY ANCESTORS Vol. 13 1977-78 page 121 "Among the TURLEY family papers in the Manuscript Division, Alderman Library University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA 22903 (Accession No 4557) is an undated letter written to Nancy GAUNT TURLEY by her brother Daniel GAUNT from Indiana requesting that her husband, Charles TURLEY, be made power of attorney for him in Virginia inasmuch as he did not expect to return there. He stated he had purchased 160 acres of land on St. Mary's River in Adams Co., near Decatur, Indiana, at $35.00 per acre where the soil is 18 inches deep and has no rocks. He mentions another brother William GAUNT. He mentions also the "Book Act and Service for 1820 , 1821, 1823 which is his father's." Any information would be greatly appreciated, Linda Cashen Gaunt **************Get a jump start on your taxes. Find a tax professional in your neighborhood today.
