    3. Sharon: Yes in deed, Patsy was the nickname for Martha Mary = Polly Nancy=Ann Ann = Nancy Betsy = Elizabeth Jno. = John or Jonathan Sarah = Sally Martha = Patsy Mildred = Milly These are just a few that spring to mind. I hope that others will chime in here. On Mar 2, 2009, at 10:31 AM, SGates1949@aol.com wrote: > Another interesting nickname is PATSY for Martha. 3. There's an excellent list of male and female nicknames from the 18th and 19th centuries on the website of the Connecticut State Library. (Looks like Jean's list may have come from there.)  This is the URL (if it doesn't come through right on the List, you can go to the home page of the library, click on "Genealogy" from the list on the left, then choose "Nicknames."):   http://www.cslib.org/nickname.htm   I've just finished a long research report clearing up a misnamed and misidentified female ancestor who for almost 100 years has been published under the wrong name. The entire messy confusion, including an erroneous second wife for her husband, revolved around early researchers getting the wrong formal name for the nickname she was known by. It was actually finding this list from the Connecticut library several years ago that set me on the right research path.
