You know, I have seen something of the Elizabeth/Ann situation myself. In the early 1700s I have a female who is definitely named Ann, yet in court records she is alternately given as Elizbeth and Ann. It is the same person because she is the only administrator of the husband's will and she remarries, she and her husband are the administrators, and once again, her name shows as Ann. Is it possible that, as in so many cases, the norm is different than it is today?
