Can you name a modern road nearby? Was it near Rixeyville? The tract I am looking for was 322 acres granted by Garland and John Thompson to John Commings May 31, 1811 (Culpeper Co. Deed Book EE, p. 270). The property had been conveyed to the Thompsons by Philip Lightfoot and Isaac Williams two years earlier. "Beginning at Muddy Run Bridge corner to Davenport"...all other markers Spanish, Post, and Red Oaks until "corner to Isaac Green"..then a spring, more oaks, then "Green and Daniel Duvall to a drain in the lane in Duvall line. Corner to Jeffery.." thence "down the said (Muddy) run to the beginning." John Cummings died in 1826; in 1829, the property was deeded to Samuel Rixey, who held a lein on it at the time of John's death. Do you recognize any of these names? I would guess that the Rixeys lived near the present village of Rixeyville. There was a brick manor house on John Cummings' property when he li! ved there, and I strongly suspect he was buried on his land. I would like very much to locate the property to see if any trace of the house or a gravestone can be found. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
