Would "Culpepper County Virginia Marriages 1781-1825, Marriages of Orange County Virginia 1747-1810 and "The Vestry Book and Register of St. Peter's Parish(1684-1786) be secondary sources if they were compiled and transcribed and published? Ex: Page 20 "Culpepper County Virginia Marriages 1781-1825 published by Researchers of Indianapolis Wilhoite, Reynolds Lucy Towles 1815 Would copies of the real deeds be primary sources and accepted by genealogist and organizations?
My dear Winnie: I hate to be a pill, but CULPEPER is not spelled "CULPEPPER." Leave out the salty spice with the two p's. Yes, anything that is not an original piece of paper is a secondary source, since it is only some one else's opinion of what they think they saw. In terms of citing secondary sources (or any source for that matter), give all of the information. Not just the title of a book. Author, publisher, year published, place published, and page number if needed. If it is an original document, cite the source too, as in county, state, book and page. (And remember--always remember--that a recorded will or deed is also a secondary source. The ORIGINAL source is the actual document from which it was recorded. A fine, but important, point to keep in mind.) The main purpose of citing sources is so that (1) you remember where the hell you found it and (2) the person reading your material can also find it.
