There was a Lucy Clayton "b. abt 1720" in Essex Co., who was a sister of old mjr. Philip Clayton 1712 (or 1702 if you prefer) -1786 Culpeper. She married James Jones. The Lucy Clayton who married Wm.Wms. is old mjr Philip's daughter. Eldest daughter I'm supposing because he always names his three children in the order Lucy, Samuel, & Susannah. (I descend from Samuel.) Susannah b. 1740 according to a DAR record, in 1756 also acc. to a DAR record ~married Col. James Slaughter 1732-1799. The way I had figured it Lucy was born abt 1737, Sam 1738, & Susannah 1740. 1738 for my Sam because in 1759 when he would probably become of age, oldmjrPhilip (Culpeper Deed Bk C, p239-241) turned over the land and stuff he (Sam) already had in his possession and lived upon. Made me think this was the earliest this could be accomplished legally, while it probably was a practical fact for a couple of years prior. (I have this cryptic source which reads "11T187 p 418" tacked onto Sam's marriage date of 12 Jul 1757 to his cousin Ann Coleman. I'm afraid at this moment I have no idea what that's from, maybe the bk: "Married Well and Often" from Google's recently digitized books. I have 18 Aug 1736 Essex County, Va. for old mjr Philip & Ann Coleman. Unbelieveably, I did not record the source. Or it inexplicably vanished. All I know is I came across it in the past year or so and remember being pleased to think it fit my guessimates of Lucy, Sam & Susannah's ages. [OK Go ahead & laugh Craig ~ I *really* do need to go thru my very own family, person by person, date by date, since the greater part of this was done in 1994 before any bks/databases/corroborating evidence came on line] I have 1778 for the death date of Wm. Wms. I'm guessing he was born abt 1730. He and Lucy were married before 15 Jan 1752 and their first son John, Mjr. in the Rev, was born in 1753. (Their last child Philip Williams, who became the court clerk of Shenandoah county, was born in 1770.)
