Author: jimbartlett1 Surnames: Payne Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.culpeper/4556.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Keith; Try the Personal Property Tax Lists (PPTL). They were taken in every VA County from 1782 through 1850 and are available on microfilms from the LDS Family History Centers everywhere. The PPTL listed every man 21 and over and counted as a tithe, any man over 16. Thus if you see John Smith in the PPTL in 1815, 16, 17 with one tithe, and then in 1818, 19, 20 with two tithes, you can reasonably assume he had a son born c1802. You can look for the other families of the same surname in Culpeper Co in the 1790s to perhaps find the father's name. Good luck; Jim Bartlett Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. John Cook
    3.   According to a Bible record, my 7th great grandparents, Robert Fielding Cooke and Susanna Watson, in 1787 moved from St. Mary's County, Maryland, to Culpeper Co., and, by 1791, they were in Greenville County, South Carolina. I am looking for records of their stay in Culpeper County.                                                                                          Thank you;                                                                                         John Cook

If there is, are there any hints as to which of the three Samuel Claytons in Culpeper in the 1780s when their son Philip was born this could possibly be? Oh, And what in the world Harriet's last name was? (I know, I should be so lucky :) Thank you in advance, Cynthia in Wisconsin

Payne who married Polly McKensey 5/25/1801 by Rev. James Garnett [Baptist] Culpeper Co. I am not related I tried checking the census for Bennet on the Heritage census, I did find him on the 1820 Jefferson, Ky census and they had his name spelt Bennit D. Payne. It showed 3 males to age 10 2 to 16 1 16-26 1 45 Females 1 female to 10 2 to 16 1 to 26 1 45 1 45 & up You might try different spelling, they were famous for spelling names wrong and the indext to the census were copied wrong in like Bennit for Bennet. They also used initals example B.D. Good Luck Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He did eventually move to Madison County Kentucky in 1808. Would appreciate any suggestions as how to find him in Culpeper or in "any" county in Virginia. I do NOT know the names of his parents. 3. Charlene: I've never seen the name spelled with a "c" so have changed the subject line accordingly. Elizabeth Foushee was a daughter of William Foushee who names her in his short will of 1839 as one of "my four youngest daughters." As Betty W. Foushee, she married Fayette M. Latham, Culpeper County marriage bond dated 6 March 1854 (not 1853). You can also find this family on the 1850 census through ancestry.com. Craig M. Kilby P.S. 1. [VACULPEP] Wheatleys in Culpeper County
    2. Mike & Linda Stockdale
    3. In 1760 John Wheatley and his wife Ann of Fauquier County sold to Henry Field of Culpeper County 277 acres in St. Mark's Parish in the Great Fork of Rappahannock River, in a plan of division marked "Lawney" between John and his brothers. I'm interested in knowing the origin of the name "Lawney." I'm wondering if this property could have been named for Captain Christopher Lawne, one of the first settlers of Isle of Wight County. Thanks for any help.

    3. That might be hard, there are several French Strothers, never mind this is the Patriot I believe his wife is Lucy Coleman so just how it works with your people <G> I don't know http://books.google.com/books?id=XXIUAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA103&lpg=PA103&dq=%22french+strother%22+coleman&source=web&ots=IHXwRKRYow&sig=5OYFF9ju_nAqxvGRnGuQCA3Le18&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=1&ct=result I googled French Strother and got the above, I think you could find a ton online. Page 103 of the above is pretty complete about French Strother and his parents Margaret French and James Strother. They connect thru the Miches and the Pannils so I pay attention; and my grandmother swore we were Strother descendants, I can't find it but My ancestor married first a Pannill and then a Strother and was grandmother to JEB Stuart and Pres. Taylor. Eliz On Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 4:08 PM, marsha moses <mosesm@earthlink.net> wrote: > While looking at the Virginia Herald adds, I viewed the below > information. 3. There's some infor about Henry Corbin at http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/FGS/Corb/CorbinHenry-AliceEltonhead.shtml Years ago, on another computer, I downloaded a photo of a painting of Henry. We've moved since then and I've changed computers 3 or 4 times. I've also changed genealogy software programs. Right now, I have no idea where to look for that photo. Once I get back into my "home office" and get items unpacked and properly stored I should be able to put my hands on it. Also at http://books.google.com/books?id=6tQRAAAAYAAJ&pg=RA1-PA374&lpg=RA1-PA374&dq= henry+corbin%2Bvirginia&source=web&ots=w2_TAb28rV&sig=yh-RJTlyCL7Ku9bLuBQY1n JT6QY&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=4&ct=result I can send you a 5-generation or so chart - my line includes connection to Green family which ties into G. Washington via Ball family - there's also another connection to Washington via the Lane family, however, there's a missing record that definitively ties Lane/Hardage families to Washington except for references in his (Washington's) diaries.
