    1. [VACULPEP] D. LATHAM & Elizabeth CLAYTON
    2. Cynthia Claytonroberts
    3. from an old book of DAR records online at Google Booksearch, Vol IV DAR ID's from #3001 thru 4000 published in 1893: D. LATHAM m. Elizabeth CLAYTON, dau of one of the Philip Clayton(s) who served in the Revolution. dau Frances (LATHAM) m. Francis Ransdall SLAUGHTER son Cadwallader SLAUGHTER m. Frances Ann (VANCE) dau Elizabeth Frances SLAUGHTER m. Squire BASSETT The BASSETT's had at least 4 daughters born Lexington, Fayette Co., Kentucky: Frances b. 1856 m. William L. Threlkeld Elizabeth b. 1858 m. Dr. Matthew Scott Emma b. 1868 & Anna b. 1870 I found the BASSETTs on the 1880 Lexington Ky Census. And apparently the mom, Mrs. Elizabeth Frances (SLAUGHTER) Bassett died that same year at Christmastime. Of course all the Culpeper folk have passed on by that time and my only wild guess as to whom the SLAUGHTER line runs way back to would be the Cadwalader Slaughter b. abt 1735 in Essex Co. d. aft 1798 in Fauquier Co., Va m. Mary Elizabeth RANSDELL (RAMSDELL?) of the Col Francis SLAUGHTER 1701-1765 & Anne LIGHTFOOT (1708-1748) line. Does any of this ring bells to anyone researching any of these families connected to Culpeper? Is there a generation missing? While this isn't one of my Philip Claytons, well I don't think so anyway :) ; a Robert LATHAM, jr. cosigned the security bond for my Sam Clayton in 1790 when he was sheriff of Culpeper county so I've always been interested in the LATHAM family too. Anybody know what the "D." stands for in D. Latham? Cynthia, befuddled in Wisconsin as usual

    3. Dear Winnie: You are getting a little greedy on this one. The only to find an exact birthday for his woman is from a church parish record, a family bible, or her tombstone, and in that order of reliability. Parish records for Essex County for this period are not extant. So eliminate that one. UNLESS she was born in England and them came to Virginia later. Then you might have some luck. Family bibles from this period would be scarce, but who knows, may exist. Tombstones for this period are rare, and even if there was one, it may long ago have worn away or been trampled by cows, pigs or sheep. As such, finding an exact birthdate is truly Quixotic. However, if there are any records of her being an orphan and she happened to exercise her right at age 14 to choose her own guardian, you MIGHT be in luck. In rare instances, birthday might be given in these older records as to when their apprenticeships expired. Hardly ever found in the case of females. But you never know. Good luck, Craig Kilby On Dec 5, 2008, at 5:50 PM, Winnie Miller wrote: > Trying to find the exact birthday of Ann Ester Powell b 1670 Essex > and death c 18 Dec 1744, daughter of Thomas Powell and Mary Place. > (Ann remarried Dulin,Dulan, Dooling after Edward died). > Marriage to Edward Coffey abt 1688 in Essex. > Edward Coffey and Ann Powell had: My Martha Patsy, John, Edward, > Auster(Austos), Ann, Elizabeth. > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to VACULPEP- > request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes > in the subject and the body of the message

    3. To clear up a few of the grosser musings published & republished ad infinitum re: the Clayton family of Culpeper, Go to Google Book Search: http://books.google.com/ Input: Selden's and Allied Families Scroll down list of families to Clayton Family (p451). [I only wish this had been available online before I spent eons sorting it out tracking down the actual Wills & deeds & what dates I could, but alas it was 2007 when Vol II was digitalized and I tripped over it this year. I don't vouch for the whole book, but the Clayton chapter was done by Torrence who had major access to actual Wills, deeds, etc. when he moved from Georgia to the family stomping grounds later in life. I did find to my amateur delight - we agree on the Elizabeth (Clayton) Anderson Pendleton business] Rev. William Clayton Torrence, (1884-1953) a lineal descendant of the Lt. Philip Clayton 1746-1807Georgia who m. Mildred Dixon, son of the Sam b. abt 1715 d. 1782 in Frederick County, Va.& wife Susannah, clears up a good deal of the goobledegook on the Clayton family in Rev. Slaughter's book & Green's repetition of it. (Even tho they all left out the wayward son, my Samljrjr who m. Catherine Price in 1786 and removed to Kentucky by Oct 1792, son of Sam & Ann (& brother to Ann C. "Nancy" who married Jeremiah Strother, Philip who m. Ann Swann Churchill (their son Philip Samuel Clayton b. 10 May 1809 is the one married the Conway girl., Marianne), Robert Coleman, Thomas who m. Sarah Cunningham & Geo. who m. Eliz. Broadus Gaines). I think that's everyone. [Elizabeth (Clayton) Anderson Pendleton b. abt 1714 m. Nathaniel Pendleton 1715-1793, the signer, 14 Oct 1744. If she were the daughter of Philip who m. Ann Coleman 18 Aug 1736, she'd be 7 years old at best in 1744... This is comparable to their father Sam christened 1686 in Va. who m. Elizabeth Pendleton in Va., descending from John the Atty-General whose son John the botanist was being chistened the same year in Fulham, Middlesex, England, neither of whom having ever set foot upon Virginia soil until 1705... Not all that long after their father died in 1735, Elizabeth was the executrix of her deceased husband Joseph Anderson's Will (Essex 1743). She was the sister of Philip 1712 (or 1702 if you prefer) d. 1786 Culpeper; the Philip, who had only three (3) children as stated in his will: 1.Lucy m. Wm Williams, 2.Sam m. his cousin Ann Coleman, and 3. Susannah m. Col. James Slaughter; (The Crittenden business has simply got to be a family myth as you can trace the ancestry of John Jay with dates and there are no Clayton daughters of anybody involved.) Elizabeth is mentioned as "Elizabeth Anderson" in their father Sam's Will written 1734 p. Tapp Court, Essex 19 Aug 1735. So we can connect the dots. They had a kid Nathaniel, jr. 1746-1821 who m. Susan Bard and was the Nathaniel 2nd to Alexander Hamilton in his duel with Aaron Burr.] As to the Saml Clayton jr, who in the bk "Baltimore, Its history & Its People" pub. 1912 NY, (purported to be the son of my Sam Clayton & cousin Ann Coleman) marrying a Harriet_______?, and supposedly being the father of a Philip b. 1780 Culpeper who m. Mary Brewer of Annapolis... I'm guessing, if this Philip son of a Sam Clayton was actually born in Culpeper ~ this Sam must have been the son of iii. John Clayton b. est 1717 who married Mary Fargeson 25 Mar 1740; John being another son of Sam Clayton d. 1735 in Tappahannock, Essex County, Virginia. In Mary's father Samuel Fargeson's 1772 Will Culpeper, he mentions his grandsons of his deceased daughter Mary: "Samuel, George, and Philip Clayton". My only hope to clear this one up seems to be a descendant of John Clayton & Mary Fargeson stumbling over the Culpeper list. Just in case my email address changes in the interim, until I croak I do intend to keep that free one: CynthiaClaytonroberts@juno.com active. Thanks to everyone who tried to help. 3. They were a wealthy family at one time <VBG> But I think it might be the sheer number of Strothers rather than the size of a farm that got so many Strothers of all spellings. I went to check the 1850 census and there were over 283 Strothers with a Virginia connection and then I limited by white male and got only 20. So not so many as I thought <G> and all of them in Ashbys, Fauquier, VA. I checked the oldest on the list and got for Real Estate owned $7500- and $1200- and $1200- and $6000- not big farms and there were only 169 slaves owned by any Strother in Virginia in 1850. Now I didn't check all the variants <G> to be fair. I am interested in the Strothers since my ancestor married as her second husband William Strother and between them they were grandparents of JEB Stuart and President Taylor. 2. June, Could you look for any Robinson's, Robertson's Smith's, and Benson's in the Culpeper Marriage book? I thank you in advance, Elaine In a message dated 12/1/2008 8:38:06 P.M. They moved just before the census or came into an area where they already took the census. If?Bennet D. Payne?married 1801 the next census would not be until 1810.?You mentioned he left Va 1808 for Kentucky so he would not show up with family on 1800 census or 1810 census for VA. The next census would not be until 1820. Remember census were every 10 years. I did find him on the Jefferson, KY 1820 census and they had his name spelt Bennit D. Payne. My Culpeper Marriage book showed: Bennet D. Payne & Polly McKensey married 5/25/1801 by Rev. James Garnett [Baptist] Hope this helps you understand the 7 years laps. 1. [VACULPEP] Hume marriages
    2. Can you please do the favor of looking up the HUME marriages in Culpeper or Madison County? It is interesting to see the Strother name all the time. When I was a girl in Charleston WV we had no whites by this name but we had myriad colored friends whose names were changed versions of this-in my own class I had Ester Mae Strawther, Frank Straughter, and Cynthia Strader. I would nearly bet they are all descended from slaves on the Strother plantation. Was it large? Sharon Lee Gates In a message dated 12/02/08 3:46:23 P.M.
