Hi June, Thank you. I have this already but there is no proof to Elizabeth Brocus. I do see the Ann Elizabeth Lewis. This is what I posted today to other mailing lists. I am trying to find these deeds but Spotsylvania wasn't formed until 1720 so the 1711 deed is in another county I guess. But the 1724 deed for Elizabeth should be in Spotsylvania. A deed of 1729 is the first I have found in that county. Here it is : Would anyone know where I could find this deed ? John Holladay received 400 acres of land. He moved from lower Virginia on Pamusky River to Spotsylvania County ten miles above N. Wales in 1711. His wife, Elizabeth received 400 acres in 1724 in St. George's Parish. I am hoping this might identify Elizabeth. The earliest land grant I have found is dated 1 Sep 1729: James Taylor of Drysdale Par., Caroline County, to John Holloday of St. George's Parish, 36 curr., 260 acres on the E. side East North East River, part of a pat. granted sd Taylor 21 Jul 1722 in St. George's Parish, Spts. Co. Rec. 1 Apr 1729 Book A in Spotsylvania County.. Also....John Marshall Holladay's son Joseph married Elizabeth " Betty" Lewis daughter of Harry Lewis. Joseph Holladay had a son Lewis who married Elizabeth (Lewis) Littlepage , widow of Col. James Littlepage. She was a daughter of Zachary Lewis and Mary Waller Lewis according to Hayden. Their son Waller Holladay married Huldah Fontaine Lewis. She is the daughter of Col. Zachary and Ann Overton (Terrill) Lewis. They lived at Prospect Hill in Spotsylvania Co., Va. Creek in the S.W. part of Spots. Co, VA on which he lieved, died and was buried as that on which his great grandson Lewis Holladay lived died and was buried as was his great grandson Lewis Holladay lived died and was buried? and so was Waller his great grandson was born and reared. The site of the dwelling and the graves of John and his wife Elizabeth is several hundred yards from the residence of Lewis H. and of his great grandson Dr. Lewis L.H. before he removed to Orange Co. The latter was called Bellefonte from a fine spring near the dwelling house. Have more but to long for the Culp Co site June ?
Hopefully this will come through without the garble from copy and pasting. Sorry ! I posted yesterday on my 7th great grandfather John Marshall Holladay and whether his wife was Ann Elizabeth Lewis or Elizabeth Brocus. Apparently no one knows. I thought I would post some extra info to see if it means anything to anyone on the list. John Marshall Holladay was born 1676 in England and died and left his will in Spotsylvania dated 4 Nov 1742. His will was proved on 7 Dec 1742. The will names his son ... One of his descendants is Waller Holladay. His son Josepjh married Betty Lewis and records indicate he was close to Zachary Lewis, Waller line. In fact one of his descendants is Waller Holladay. In 1705 John Marshall Holladay owned 200 acres in King William County, Va. Researching the family of Civil War General Gabriel C. Wharton, a son of John Wharton and Elizabeth Colvin, born July 2, 1824 in Culpeper. The Plantation of John Wharton was near what is now Mitchel’s Station. In 1941, Georgia Wharton Lamb published information in a Culpeper Newspaper in reference to the General. I will try this one more time and hopefullty the garble from copy and pasting will not come through. My 5th great grandparents are Moses Cushenberry and wife Ann unknown. Moses was born ca 1720-1740. He was from Virginia. He was in Kentucky in Fayette and Bourbon counties as early as 1783. He died in Bourbon Co., Ky in 1792 where he left his inventory. The Cushenberry name has been spelled several ways in records in Kentucky. Moses settled in the Limestone area in the town of Washington and Licking Creek and the land eventually became Mason Co., Ky although it was in Fayette and Bourbon counties when Moses lived there. It is believed Moses was a part of the Virginia Quisenbery family and possibly a brother to Aaron Quisenberry, Sr. son of Humphrey Quisenberry or Humphrey's brother William Quisenberry although I am still looking for a record to prove it. Below is relationships that shows the Quisenberry family and intermarriages and the Traveling Church were known to my Moses Quisenberry that died 1792 in Bourbon Co., Ky. Moses and Ann's children are: (1) John Cushenberry married Rebecca Dowden10 Dec 1791. (2) William Cushenberry... had a daughter Rachel who married Richard Brown. (3) Elijah Cusenberry married Polly unknown..... their daughter Obedience married (i) Johnson Ellis, (ii) Johnson J. Cockerell. (4) Vincent Cushenberry m. Mary Davis dau of William Davis 4 May 1791 in Bourbon Co., Ky.. (5) Daniel Cushenberry m. Sally Davis dau of William Davis. (6) Mary Cushenberry m. Nicholas Lindsay. (70 Elizabeth Cushenberry m. Zachariah Ross. (8) Anna Cushenberry m. Vachel Lindsay. (9) Rachel Cushenberry m. John F. Pullin (Pulliam). In Fayette County, Ky. Moses sons William and Elijah Cushenbery bought land from Rev. Lewis Craig and bounded by William Robinson of "The Traveling Church". The Fayette Co., Ky Tax List A as an example shows on 8 June 1787 my "Moses Coosenberry" next to Rawleigh Chinn and Smith Darnell on each side of him with John Tandy on down on that date. John Quisenberry was also in Fayette Co., Va in a 1788 deed bounded by Thomas Burris and Robert McMillion and the record was acknowledged in Orange Co., Va as well as in Ky. Also Rev. James Quisenberry was in Fayette Co., Ky son of Aaron Quisenberry and Joyce Dudley. He was born 1759 in Spotsylvania Co., Va and died in Clark Co., Ky in 1830. He m. 1st Jane Burris dau of Thomas Burris and Frances Tandy and 2nd to Chloe Shipp. My Moses Cushenberry's children moved on to Warren Co., Ky and Allen Co., Ky formed from Warren County. Aaron Quisenberry was also in the 1820 Warren County records. He is the grandson of Aaron Quisenberry and Joyce Dudley. My Moses Cushenberry son Elijah m. dau Obedience m. Johnson Ellis 31 Jan 1804 in Fayette Co., Ky. Johnson Ellis died 1814 in Warren Co., Ky. Elijah Cushenberry named a son Neil McCann. It should be noted that the family of Hezekiah Ellis and Mildred Burbridge had a dau who m. Joseph McCann and a dau Sarah who m. O'Neal McCann. Mildred m. 2nd to Benjamin Robinson. Also Sallie Ellis married Aaron Quisenberry whose first wife was Rachel Shelton. The Kentuckian-Citizen, Paris, Ky dated 22 Jan 1946 states" The McCann's Joseph and Neal were brothers of "Grandmother Cusenberry." We also have a Dudley Robinson who married into my Cushenberry family in Ky. Moses Quisenbery son of Aaron and Joyce Dudley was confused with my Moses Cushenberry for several years. But my Moses was older born ca 1720-1740 time frame as he died in 1792. So in my rsearch which started in the 1980's on Moses Cushenberry continues. If anyone can contribute to what I have it would be very much appreciated as the people named and the relationships are rather suspicious. :) Marianne Dillow

John Hallett Clark lll , 90, born Oct. 31, 1918 in Bristol, VA, son of John H Clark Jr. and Shirley Winston of Bristol, d 7 Jan. 2009. "He was a direct descendant of Alexander Spotswood, the first territorial Gov. of VA" Obit in the Courier-Journal, pg B-4 Col:3,4,5, Thursday Jan. 8. As we hear so much about Spotswood I thought this would prove interesting to any Clark's doing research of the family.
>>............................. 4 William Williams 1725 - 1770 b: Bet. 1725 - 1735 in St. George's Par., Spotsylvania --Of Cedar Farm, Culpeper Co., Va. d: Abt. 1770 in Culpeper Co., Virginia ................................. +Lucy Clayton 1720 - 1775 b: Abt. 1720 in of "Catalpa", Culpeper Co., VA. d: Aft. 1775 << Hi Charlene, I don't know if I can help with this entry or confuse it more trying. There was a Lucy Clayton "b. abt 1720" in Essex Co., who was a sister of old mjr. Philip Clayton 1712 (or 1702 if you prefer) -1786 Culpeper. She married James Jones. The Lucy Clayton who married Wm.Wms. is old mjr Philip's daughter. Eldest daughter I'm supposing because he always names his three children in the order Lucy, Samuel, & Susannah. (I descend from Samuel.) Susannah b. 1740 according to a DAR record, in 1756 also acc. to a DAR record ~married Col. James Slaughter 1732-1799. The way I had figured it Lucy was born abt 1737, Sam 1738, & Susannah 1740. 1738 for my Sam because in 1759 when he would probably become of age, oldmjrPhilip (Culpeper Deed Bk C, p239-241) turned over the land and stuff he (Sam) already had in his possession and lived upon. Made me think this was the earliest this could be accomplished legally, while it probably was a practical fact for a couple of years prior. (I have this cryptic source which reads "11T187 p 418" tacked onto Sam's marriage date of 12 Jul 1757 to his cousin Ann Coleman. I'm afraid at this moment I have no idea what that's from, maybe the bk: "Married Well and Often" from Google's recently digitized books. I have 18 Aug 1736 Essex County, Va. for old mjr Philip & Ann Coleman. Unbelieveably, I did not record the source. Or it inexplicably vanished. All I know is I came across it in the past year or so and remember being pleased to think it fit my guessimates of Lucy, Sam & Susannah's ages. [OK Go ahead & laugh Craig ~ I *really* do need to go thru my very own family, person by person, date by date, since the greater part of this was done in 1994 before any bks/databases/corroborating evidence came on line] I have 1778 for the death date of Wm. Wms. I'm guessing he was born abt 1730. He and Lucy were married before 15 Jan 1752 and their first son John, Mjr. in the Rev, was born in 1753. (Their last child Philip Williams, who became the court clerk of Shenandoah county, was born in 1770.)
I have a partial record of a Thomas Coleman that pertains to his Rev War service in case anyone needs it : Rev War Pension : Thomas Coleman Aug 1832 Barren Co., Ky. Deposition by Annis Pulliam : " 27 Nov 1832 Allen Co., Ky.... Annis Pulliam (X mark) Pulliam said county declares she and Thomas Coleman of Barren County, Ky. now deceased were raised as children together in Culpeper County, Virginia. Coleman served in the Revolutionary War. She recollects he was gone a long time." Annis (Ann) Pulliam is the daughter of Richard Parks and Mary Graves. She married John Francis Pulliam son of Thomas Pulliam and Frances Boswell. These are my grandparents that were in Culpeper and some of the family moved to Warren County, Ky. and Allen County formed from it. The families were in Spotsylvania before Culpeper. Marianne Dillow

ancestry refuses to change anything on their site that is wrong. I have tried to make several corrections but they just keep either ignoring me or telling me I am wrong. And when I am sitting looking at my mom's birth certificate and he father's name is on it and doesn't match theirs I know I am not wrong. Also I know the order in which my grandmother married her husband's and what their names were and they tell me I am wrong there also. He of course was born about 1737. I have email Ancestry over and over and they won't change it. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to VACULPEP-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Hi Sally, James Graves who married Sarah unknown whose will in 1781 in Culpeper is my 6th great grandparents. I descend from their daughter Mary Graves who married Richard Parks whose will is in Culpeper in 1817. The James Graves will l also names his daughter Jail (Jael) Jones. Richard Parks father John Parks Sr who married Margaret True will is in Spotsylvania in dated 1735. In James Graves will it mentions besides Jail Jones.. a William Jones. James Graves owned land in the fork of Rappahannock on Muddy Run. The deed is in Orange County Deed Book 10: 223-2224. . On a chart on the Parks line it shows just the names. It has John Parks and Margaret True who are the parents of my Richard Parks who married Mary Graves. The chart also shows a Mary Parks married Robert Jones. It then shows Ann Jones m. Richard Bougham; Mary m. Bryant McGrath; Lucy Jones m. Thomas Thornhill; Thomas Jones m. Agnes ?. That is all I have on them except the next generation has a Lucy Jones m. Caleb Smith. Sure it's probably hypothetical, but what's the point of referring to it over and over? I agree that evidence is credible or it isn't, but perhaps it's not what you are saying, but HOW you are saying it. You can be rather dismissive in your tone when replying. Nothing personal, just an observation. I also observe that you like to have the last word, so go ahead. I'm not responding any further, so you automatically win that one. :) Your e-mail address says it all. -----Original Message----- From: vaculpep-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:vaculpep-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Craig Kilby Sent: Tuesday, January 06, 2009 1:45 PM To: mdillow31@verizon.net; vaculpep@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [VACULPEP] It's all relative I am by no means am trying to "intinimidate" you. If you do not have evidence, don't present it. Seems pretty simple to me. I think even Judge Judy would concur on this simple basic point. If you two are related like one email said and she has all the work done and you want the proof, that sure would help you, wouldn't it?? I suggest that instead of sending to the culpeper site send the proof directly to Craig's email. FTM can do that, right? -----Original Message----- From: Craig Kilby <persisto@earthlink.net> To: mdillow31@verizon.net; vaculpep@rootsweb.com Sent: Tue, 6 Jan 2009 2:45 pm Subject: Re: [VACULPEP] It's all relative I am by no means am trying to "intinimidate" you.
