    3. Cynthia: Samuel J. Blackwell (aka Jonhson Samuel Blackwell) married Mary Isham around 1835 in Tennessee. She was a daughter of Henry Isham and Elizabeth Bell of Roane County, Tennessee. The marriage record does not survive. This marriage is proved by probate records for Henry Isham. They are both buried at Fee Fee Cemetery in St. Louis County. Mary Isham, married Samuel J. Blackwell in Tennessee, and they were living in Polk County, TN in 1840. Tennessee is my black hole of genealogy when it comes to these people. I was very fortunate to have the Isham line taken back one step further due to a post on the GENFORUM list about 12 years ago. We haven't been able to take that line back any further. All we know is that Henry Isham was born in Virginia in 1774. This is probably not the right forum to be talking about the Blackwells (at least this line.) But, since it has been so dead lately, what have we got to lose? Craig On Mar 1, 2009, at 10:27 AM, Cynthia Claytonroberts wrote: > >> Samuel J. Blackwell, born 1805 in "VIRGINIA". 1. Re: [VACULPEP] Blackwell Family
    2. Hi All, Recent discovery uncovers the name of Mahala BLACKWELL (born abt 1810, VA -- died betw the census of 1870 and 1880, probably St. Mary's, Adams Co., IN). This Mahala married (we believe) Charles Daniel GAUNT (used the name Daniel). We believe he is the s/o Andrew GAUNT (abt 1766, Culpeper Co., VA -- abt 6/1850, Rappahannock Co., VA) and Catherine CORBIN (1768, Culpeper Co., VA -- 1844, Rappahannock Co., VA). The Census info for 1850 Walnut, Fairfield Co., Ohio shows Daniel GANTZ 50 yrs., VA farmer; Mahala GANTZ 39 yrs VA; Francis GANTZ male 17 yrs., Ohio; Margaret GANTZ 15 yrs., Ohio; Mary Ellen GANTZ 13 yrs., Ohio; Lafayette GANTZ 10 yrs Ohio; Meridith GANTZ male 8 yrs Ohio; Emma E. GANTZ 5 yrs. Ohio; John H. GANTZ 2 yrs. Ohio The youngest child, Auora was born abt 1853 in Adams Co., Indiana. Family information says Daniel came to Adams Co., IN with his family (after the 1850 Census and before 1853). The Census for 1860; St. Mary's, Adams Co., IN shows Mahala (fm) 49 yrs., VA h/h Lafayette GAUNT 20 yrs., Ohio farmer Meredith GANT m 17 yrs Ohio Emeliza GAUNT 15 yrs. Ohio John H. GAUNT 12 yrs., Ohio Auora GAUNT 7 yrs. IN Previous information showed Charles D. GAUNT married to Rachael LILLARD 1824, Culpeper Co., VA. The name BLACKWELL comes from Family Bible information. I have never been able to identify Rachael LILLARD. This is a fact that connects Daniel GAUNT/GANTZ/GANT and Mahala with the Charles Daniel GAUNT s/o Andrews GAUNT and Catherine CORBIN of Culpeper Co., VA; The following is from KENTUCKY ANCESTORS Vol. 13 1977-78 page 121 "Among the TURLEY family papers in the Manuscript Division, Alderman Library University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA 22903 (Accession No 4557) is an undated letter written to Nancy GAUNT TURLEY by her brother Daniel GAUNT from Indiana requesting that her husband, Charles TURLEY, be made power of attorney for him in Virginia inasmuch as he did not expect to return there. He stated he had purchased 160 acres of land on St. Mary's River in Adams Co., near Decatur, Indiana, at $35.00 per acre where the soil is 18 inches deep and has no rocks. He mentions another brother William GAUNT. He mentions also the "Book Act and Service for 1820 , 1821, 1823 which is his father's." Any idea if his birthyear might be "abt 1805" and/or whom he married in Tennessee? Would your ancestor more likely have been born in Fauquier Co Va? I do have a couple of bunches of these in my gedcom, mostly connected to the GREENs of Orange & Culpeper, Brandy Station; but for some reason I can't figure out at the moment, at least one of Northumberland and some of Fauquier. I googled "Stella Pickett Hardy" in the book search at: http://books.google.com/ and in Full View mode, which means whole book instead of snippet thereof, up came : Colonial families of the Southern states of America: A History and Genealogy of Colonial Families who Settled in the Colonies Prior to the Revolution By Stella Pickett Hardy Published by Wright, 1911 Original from the University of Wisconsin - Madison Digitized May 23, 2008 643 pages .

    3. In the early 1900s, Stella Pickett Hardy did a lot of work on the Blackwell family of Northumberland County, Virginia, where most of them originate. This was published in the Virginia Magazine of History & Biography in a series. These were consolidated in "Genealogies of VIrginia Families" Vol. 1 (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Company, Inc., 1981). These books are available at most regional libraries that have a history and genealogy section. There is a later correction to her article, but the only place I recall seeing it was at the Tennessee State Archives in Memphis. Hardy's work was good for its time, but subsequent research by others (on other articles) shows that many of her statements are in error. So, perhaps you might pick up a thread on your Benjamin Blackwell from one of these sources. Best of luck to you. Author: knightgang Surnames: Jameson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.culpeper/4541.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: There was once a bridge and mill on Muddy Run named Jameson's Mill. It is noted on Civil War and earlier maps. Although the mill no longer stands, the foundation stones and a massive White Oak are located just above Muddy Run where the mill and miller's house once were. We invited the local forestry management guy out and he told us the oak was at least 250 years old. We believe the property has been subdivided many times, but once was part of a larger tract owned by Lt. Col. John Jameson of Culpeper County, although we are doing research now to try to determine if we are right. Jameson played a role in the capture of Benedict Arnold and the spy John Andre. Our barn is only about 100 years old, but there are massive timbers with mortise and tenon construction that appear to have been reused from an earlier structure - most likely the mill - and form the sill of the barn. You are welcome to come out to the farm in Culpeper and see everything. Just call us at 540-825-5105 and ! we'd be happy to show you the area. 1. Re: [VACULPEP] Quoting Sources
    2. Craig Kilby
    3. My dear Winnie: I hate to be a pill, but CULPEPER is not spelled "CULPEPPER." Leave out the salty spice with the two p's. Yes, anything that is not an original piece of paper is a secondary source, since it is only some one else's opinion of what they think they saw. In terms of citing secondary sources (or any source for that matter), give all of the information. Not just the title of a book. Author, publisher, year published, place published, and page number if needed. If it is an original document, cite the source too, as in county, state, book and page. (And remember--always remember--that a recorded will or deed is also a secondary source. The ORIGINAL source is the actual document from which it was recorded. A fine, but important, point to keep in mind.) The main purpose of citing sources is so that (1) you remember where the hell you found it and (2) the person reading your material can also find it.
