    3. You know, I have seen something of the Elizabeth/Ann situation myself. In the early 1700s I have a female who is definitely named Ann, yet in court records she is alternately given as Elizbeth and Ann. It is the same person because she is the only administrator of the husband's will and she remarries, she and her husband are the administrators, and once again, her name shows as Ann. Is it possible that, as in so many cases, the norm is different than it is today? 3. Hi Jean, I am constantly reading old wills - surety bonds - etc. and having a list like that would definitely come in handy. I used to have this list but as my "filing" skills leave a lot to be desired I can't find it any more. It seems to me that our ancestors used a LOT of nicknames that we, today, do not use too much any more. Is this my imagination or do you all on the list find this to be true too??? 3. There's an excellent list of male and female nicknames from the 18th and 19th centuries on the website of the Connecticut State Library. (Looks like Jean's list may have come from there.)  This is the URL (if it doesn't come through right on the List, you can go to the home page of the library, click on "Genealogy" from the list on the left, then choose "Nicknames."):   http://www.cslib.org/nickname.htm   I've just finished a long research report clearing up a misnamed and misidentified female ancestor who for almost 100 years has been published under the wrong name. The entire messy confusion, including an erroneous second wife for her husband, revolved around early researchers getting the wrong formal name for the nickname she was known by. It was actually finding this list from the Connecticut library several years ago that set me on the right research path.

    1. [VACULPEP] Nicknames
    2. Another interesting nickname is PATSY for Martha. I have an ancestor named "Patsy" Gay in Pocahontas County, WV who married Jesse Smith. Then I kept finding a Martha Smith and finally found out that Patsy was the usual nickname for Martha in the mid 19th century. Of course most of you realize, too, that POLLY is the nickname for Mary, as well. It seems funny to us now as we never hear this nicknames used today. Probably others of you have more to contribute. 3. I have come across a very interesting nickname in my uncle's Davenport line. "Toad" Every Elias Davenport went by "Toad" or "T.D." My uncle was a "late" baby, and only knew his father (Elias) by those names. "Toad" began with "The Owld (old)" or elder, much as we use "Senior" to denote an older person with the same name. It eventually morphed into "Toad" Sharon

    1. Re: [VACULPEP] Quakers in Culpeper
    2. Craig Kilby
    3. When I think of the Quakers of Culpeper, I think of William Duff of King George County whose lengthy will names all of his Green nephews, and leaves land for the Monthly Meeting in Culpeper. His various land holdings included considerable acreage in the Stonehouse Run area of Culpeper County, And man of those around his land were Quakers. I am thinking specifically of the Popham/Evins/Maxwell group from Westmoreland County. I have searched high and low for Monthly Meeting records that would apply to this group. No luck. They are not at Guilford College in Greensboro, NC. At the Mary Ball Washington Museum & Library, we recently bought a CD that has all of the known Quaker records. This includes Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina, and of course anything by Henshaw. Those with an interest in Quakers may find this CD useful. I believe we bought it through Genealogical Publishing Company. Good topic, and best of luck to all researchers, Craig Kilby On Mar 1, 2009, at 9:23 PM, Joan Horsley wrote: > Long-time Culpeper researchers Jim and Louise Hodge told me that > there was a sizable Quaker presence in Culpeper County.
