    3. About a year or more ago someone posted a link to some history and pictures etc from Culpeper. Right after that our ISP was bought by Mediacom and all the emails I had saved (with the link) disappeared. They were supposed to transfer them to us but didn't. If the person who has that link would post it again you would have access to those pictures. I hope they do as I would like it also.

Author: tunnelm1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.culpeper/303.3.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: CORRECTION: A John Brown and a William Brown married women with the surname of "George" in Caroline Co., VA (and this William Brown is the one who moved to KY or TN). It was these two men who MIGHT have been sons of the John Brown who married Mary Napier (the John Brown who married Mary Napier was a possible son of Daniel Brown.....and this Daniel Brown was a son of Abraham Brown (died by 1735) and Mary Tribble). Maybe the John Brown who married Lucy Doggett was a son of the John Brown who married Miss George in Caroline Co., VA. Sorry...I had forgotten about these "Brown/George marriages" that apparently took place BEFORE the John Brown/Lucy Doggett marriage (and there was apparently no William Brown/Miss Doggett marriage....just the above-referenced William Brown/Miss George marriage). 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: tunnelm1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.virginia.counties.culpeper/303.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Francis Brown "I" died in Essex Co., VA in 1691/1692, and one of his sons was Daniel Brown "I" (who married Jane Copeland). Daniel Brown "I" fathered a son named Abraham Brown, and Abraham (died about 1735) moved to Caroline Co., VA at some point (he married Mary Tribble). It appears that Abraham Brown fathered two (at least) sons, and they were named Daniel Brown and John Brown. We believe that John married his cousin Elizabeth Brown of Culpeper Co., VA (this Elizabeth Brown was a daughter of Daniel Brown "II" and Elizbeth Coleman, a granddaughter of Francis Brown "II" and Elizabeth Allen and a great-granddaughter of Francis Brown "I" (who MAY have married Elizabeth Cole). There was a later/second John Brown in Caroline Co., VA, and I would not be too surprised if he was a son of the above Daniel Brown in Caroline Co., VA (and Daniel's unknown wife), and hence, a grandson of Abraham Brown and Mary Tribble. The John Brown and William Brown who each married a Doggett woman certainly COULD have been sons of this later/second John Brown (who married a Mary Napier in Caroline Co., VA, as I recall). If you know of any living male Browns out of John Brown and his Doggett wife, at least one of them should join the Brown Society DNA testing project. We SUSPECT that the existing DNA donors in "Group 10" on the Brown Society DNA website "represent" the family of Francis Brown "I"....but none of the existing donors can prove their "connection" back to that family with 100% confidence. Note: A "mystery" William Brown was selected to be one of the men to appraise Abraham Brown's estate in 1735. We do not know who this William Brown was or if he was even a "blood relative" of Abraham Brown. If this "mystery" William Brown was only a son-in-law, or perhaps just a friend and neighbor, then that would mean that there was more than just one Brown family in Caroline Co., VA in the 1700s.....but I would still SUSPECT that the John and William Brown who married into the Doggett family were out of Abraham Brown versus out of this "mystery" William Brown....but certainly no proof. By the way, I understand that the William Brown who married a Miss Doggett left VA and moved to either TN or KY (I can't remember which).....unlike his brother John Brown, who apparently was in Culpeper Co., VA. 2. I found this through my library. A Mr. Duke was inquirying about John Wilhite in year 1938 and this was he received. June April 8, 1938 ? John Wilhite, S14833 ? Mr. Robert M. Duke 489 E. Jackson Street Martinsville, Indiana ? Dear Sir; ? Reference is made to your request for the Revolutionary War record of John Wilhoit or Wilhite. ? The data which follow were obtained from papers on file in the pension claim, S. 14833, based upon the Revolutionary War Service of John Wilhite. ? He was born in Culpeper County, Virginia. The date of his birth and the names of his parents were not given. ? While a resident of Orange County, Virginia, he enlisted and served as private with the Virginia troops as follows: in 1778, three months under Captain James Barbour; in 1779, two months under Capt. Robert Miller; in the fall of 1780, three months under Captain Benjamin Johnson and Colonel Thomas Barbour; in 1781, three months under Captain George Waw and was in the siege of Yorktown. ? He was allowed pension on his application executed September 5, 1832, which time he was eighty-seven years of age and he then stated that he lived in Owen County, Kentucky, most of the time. ? John Wilhite died January 1, 1837, and it was stated that he had lived in Owen Countyu, Kentucky for thirty years and previous to that time he lived in Franklin County, Kentucky. ? His only surviving child was Tobias Wilhite.? One Achilles Stapp of Scott County, Kentucky, stated in 1832 that he served in the Revolution with John Wilhite.? The name of the wife of John Wilhite was not given and there are no further data relative to the family of this soldier. ? Very truly yours, ? A. D. Hiller Executive Assistant To the Administrator

    3. Dear Nikki, I am one of the VA Thornton descendants. She married a Samuel Pryor early in the 1700's. And that is what caught my attention about your email. Then you mentioned Aphia for a first name. My great grandmother, had an aunt named Apphia Edwards and my ggm was named Mary Apphia, buit lways called Apphia or Aph, as were her descendants. I think it Apphia is a bible name but it could have been the name of a ship on which her ancestors came across the Ocean, kind of like the Abigail for whom so many women were named. Odd coincidence, since the Edwards were not related to the Thorntons except by marriage. My Pryors and Thorntons and Edwardses were in KY before it was a state in 1792 or whenever.
