The County courthouse staff are very helpful. The Germanna Colonies information at their new library is very helpful also. If you have a connection to the Germanna group a trip to their library during a Germanna reunion is great fun!

My wife growing up always wanted to name her first daughter Madison, because of Aylor being in Madison County. She also liked the name Aylor for a girl as well. Well we had a little girl three years ago and we named her Madison Aylor Kauffmann.

Did you start with yourself then work backwards. Are your parents still living? If so ask them and any other relative lots and lots of questions about background, birth places, marriage places, etc. I think there were some Coffmans in the Germanna group, but I'm not sure. I KNOW there are Coffmans in the Culpeper area.

    2. Roger Clark
    3. Hi, I am seeking someone on this list that lives in Culpeper County in the Culpeper/ Stevensburg area that would be willing to do some first hand looking for me reasonably. Could someone tell me if plat maps, tax rolls, etc. exist for Culpeper County from 1835-1860? Is there a way to find out whether someone was a landowner, rented land or was a share cropper? If someone was in the carpenter trade prior to 1863 in Culpeper County, say from 1835 to 1863, would people in trades such as this be in a special listing or directory? If so, does anyone have access to this? Your time, patience and help is very appreciated. Thank you, Bev Clark

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/QBC.2ACI/708.1088.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Greg, Have you looked at or purchased any of the Germanna Records? Germanna Record #12 contains information the Aylors, Snyders and Tanners...all of whom I am related to, as well as to more than half of the other names in that Germanna Colony. Anyway on page 63 of #12 there is Harold Wayne Aylor married (wife's name unknown) who had a son Harold Wayne Aylor, Jr. m. Madi D. Swaby. I presume this is the family from which your wife descends. Harold Wayne Aylor's father was Wade Booton Aylor (b. 2 Sep 1887, d. 1967, m. Aurie Temple Rosser). I looked at the Record #12 hoping to see a Kauffman/Coffman there, but didn't find one. Unfortunately, there is no index so I may have overlooked it. You might also get in contact with the Germanna Group at the Germanna College there. Their address is P.O. Box 693, Culpeper, VA 22701-0693. E-mail address is: office@germanna.org. Website is www.germanna.org It is possible that someone has further updated some of those Germanna records. It certainly wouldn't hurt to ask.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/QBC.2ACI/708.1088.1 Message Board Post: Greg, It has been a long, long time since I researched my Greens, Aylors and Browns in Culpeper and Madison Counties. My cousin and I just got through publishing our 2-volume (8-1/2x11) 1600 page (total) book on the other side of our family, the Wickleins and Wicklines...a work that has been ongoing for the past 15 or so years. You said that your wife's grandmother "was a Brown, married to Harold SR." Was your wife's grandmother's maiden name Brown or was that the surname for her husband, Harold, Sr.? Yes, I've been to the Aylor Cemetery, but couldn't find anyone there whose name, at the time, I recognized. I have been looking for whatever Browns my Green(e) ancestor, Garner Dawson Green(e) married about 1842. They, like the Greens are some of the most elusive people to track.

    1. [VACulpeper] Levenia Tucker
    2. I am getting in on the tail end of the email message of Tucker. I don't know if this is what you are looking for but: On the 1850 Census Prince Edward there is a Levenia Tucker age 16 from Amelia living at a Female Academy. It does not give a name for the academy. #351 John B. Tinsley age 46 Teacher born in Richmond his wife and children living with him at the academy. Girls listed at the academy were from Amelia, Powhatan, Louisa, Cumberland, Chesterfield, and Prince Edward. On the 1850 Putnam, VA 46th District Perry Tucker age 30 Mary age 30 or 36 Levinia E. age 5 Edmund L. 4 There is a lot of Tucker's in Amelia Co., VA as well. Remember you can't always go by the correct age from census. My grandfather on census's was off on age as much as 3 & 4 years. JBF
