    1. [VACulpeper] John N. Johnson marriage
    2. Cathy Garrett
    3. When my ggmother died, her husband was left with an infant and 4 children to raise. He soon married Annie L____. If someone has access to marriage records of Fauquier Co, could you please tell me who the second wife of John N. Johnson was. His first wife Elizabeth Churchill Crutcher died in Jan 1880, and is buried at Mt. Holly in Remington, Fauquier Co, VA. The first child of John and Annie was born Dec 1882 in MS, so the marriage took place between Jan 1880 and March 1882. Annie claims VA as her pob on the 1890 and 1900 census, and the pob for both her parents, so the marriage probably occurred there. Any info appreciated. Cathy Johnson Garrett

My ggggmother was Eleanor Redman Monteith, married to Enos Monteith in Stafford County, which is next to Culpeper County. Personal contacts and a Monteith family tree rumor her to be half-Cherokee. Unfortunately, I have only her death record of 1778-1870 as wife of Enos Monteith to go on. No true record that she was Redman or who her parents were, but I hope that you may have a Redman who moved east from Culpeper to marry. I descend from Eleanor through Monteith, Hudson and Rollins lines. Love to hear from you.

    1. [VACulpeper] John DUFF/Sarah NASH - VA to KY
    2. Sharon Clark
    3. Hello, Cindy Crigler, a distant cousin, posted the following on Duff Genforum. Cindy is a descendant of Daniel MARR and Susannah DUFF. Susannah was the widow of Berryman Jennings. I am a descendant of Susannah's brother, John DUFF, who married Mary WHEATLEY 7 Jan 1788 in Fauquier Co., VA. They moved to Old Rocky Hill, Barren Co., KY in the late 1790s. Does anyone have any information on these folks? This is from Some Prominent Virginia Families, Vol. 1-4 by Louise Pecquet du Bellet, Lynchburg, VA: J. P. Bell Company, 1907. It is Volume IV, Chapter III on the Washington family [pages 46 - 68], and then the section on the Duff family, Pages 69 - 72: "In 1712 Robert Green and his uncle William Duff came to VA and settled in King George Co. Among his descendants was Judge William Green, President of Court of Appeals, and a warm friend of Judge Daniel Smith. "Each named a son after the other. Daniel Smith Green was a surgeon US Army before the war. Judge Daniel Smith named one son John William Green Smith after Judge William Green. "William Duff had a brother, James Duff, b. 1716. Married Mildred Tutt, of Culpeper Co., VA, 1738. They had a son: "I. John Duff, b. 1739. Married Sarah Nash, in 1760. They had issue: "I. James Duff, b. April 15, 1761. Married Elizabeth Strother, b. July 20, 1773. "II. Susannah Duff, b. Aug. 23, 1763. Married, first, Benjamin Jennings; second, Daniel Moar [should be MARR], July 12, 1786. She was the ancestor of John Oillard [sould be John Quincy MARR], who shed the first blood of the war for secession. "III. George Duff, b. 1765; d. 1886, unmarried. "IV. John Duff, b. 1768, moved to KY. "Ann Pendleton Slaughter((5)) (Robert((4)), Col. James((3)), Robert((2)), Robert((1))). Married (in 1811) John Dabney Strother. They had issue: "I. Elizabeth Strother. Married (in 1834) Enoch H. Hunter. "II. Mary Strother. Married (in 1837) Henry Glascock. "III. Margaret Strother. Married William A. Slaughter, of Hodgensville, KY, son of Robert Coleman Slaughter, of Hardin Co., KY, and his wife, Nancy, daughter of Thomas Haynes. "IV. Dr. Robert T. Strother. Married Miss Whitney, daughter of Mrs. Gen'l Edmond Pendleton Gaines by her first marriage. "V. Sarah Strother. Married Frank Bealmear, of Nelson Co., KY "VI. Maria Strother. Married William Howard, of Lee's Summit, Mo., previously of Jefferson Co., KY; one child, Anna Howard. "VII. Dr. William D. Strother. Married Miss Julia Saunders, of Bullitt Co., KY Issue: "I. Mary Elizabeth Strother. Married Joseph Field. "II. Dr. Joseph Saunders Strother. Married Miss Cowherd. "III. Hon. John D. Strother, Lee's Summit, Mo.; attorney, and member of MO Legislature. "IV. George Beauregard Strother, attorney, Belter, MO "V. Howard Strother, attorney, Belter, MO "VI. Benjamin F. Strother, insurance agent, Kansas City, MO I also found this information this evening at the Fort Worth Public Library, but their copy of the book was on microfiche and they don't have any method of making "hard" copies of the information. The next section is on the STROTHER family. Is this information correct? Is the John DUFF who went to KY the one who married Mary WHEATLEY??? Thank you, and have a good evening. 1. [VACulpeper] Culpeper's Fairview Cemetery
    2. Donna S. Boyd
    3. If you have family buried in Fairview Cemetery in Culpeper, Va., we want to hear from you! If you live in the area and want to join us, the Town Council meeting regarding this will be Tuesday night, 5/28, at 7:00 P.M. in the Board of Supervisors room at 302 N. Main Street, Culpeper. The Culpeper Town Council owns the cemetery and is charged with the responsibility for perpetual care. HOWEVER, it is going to rack and ruin because NOTHING has been done except mowing and trimming for years. Headstones are falling over; stone tablets are sinking into the ground, other stones are deteriorating & crumbling. The oldest sections of the cemetery -- those belonging to Antioch Baptist Church, the oldest African-American church in the county, and the IOOF (Oddfellows)-- are in the worst shape. If your ancestors are here then you really need to read this article on Fairview! http://www.starexponent.com/ Priscilla Harper has been trying to get something done for years. Several of us have decided to join forces with Priscilla to see that this valuable aspect of Culpeper's history is not lost because of inertia on the part of Town Council. In 1984 the Town was given a list of damaged and displaced stones in greatest need of repair. There were 164 names. Nothing was done, and in 1995 the number had increased to almost 190. Still nothing has been done. Although some time ago the Council has said an effort would be made to contact owners or descendants of owners of lots in the cemetery, this has not begun to date. In the draft budget for fiscal year 2003 there is $10,000. allocated for consulting fees to formulate "an old headstone repair policy" but only $3,000.00 for actual repairs/restoration. How hard is it to look at the stones and decide to repair the ones in the worst condition first? If you decide you want to help us to restore and save Fairview Cemetery, please send us your contact information: name, address, phone number, and e-mail address if you have one. It would also help if you would write to Town Council and express to them how appalled you are at conditions there. Please send us a copy as well, so we can document these communications and keep them from being swept under the rug. The address for the Town offices, where all Council members can receive mail, is 118 West Davis Street, Culpeper, Va. 22701. If you would prefer to contact these folks individually here is their contact information that I got from a local government website. I have put stars beside the names of those labeled with expiring terms. I know that Waller Jones was defeated, as was Robert Ryan. Michael Corbin chose not to run. Their terms don't expire until 6/30/2002. I will post an update on the new folks when they take office. Here are the names of the members of Town Council: Jeffery A.C. Burke 201 N. 1. [VACulpeper] James Sims b. 1754 in Culpeper Co., VA d. 1845 in Nicholas Co., WV
    2. Cathy Meder-Dempsey
    3. Hi Listers, With the help of many other Sims descendants I gathered documentation that enabled me to write a biography for my 5th great-grandfather, James Sims 1754-1845 of Nicholas County, (West) Virginia. James, born in Culpeper County, Virginia, was the only child of Jeremiah Sims and Agatha Nalle, both of Culpeper. Most of James' children lived in the Kanawha, Nicholas and Fayette counties and married into the families of the area including: Windsor, Johnson, Hughes, Hunter, Neal, Fowler, Stanley, Foster, Settle, Darlington, Summers, and Bays. His eldest son Jeremiah Sims moved to Clark County, Ohio, with his wife Sarah Milhollen probably in 1804. My line down from James Sims: James Sims[1] and his wife Phebe Nancy Ann Sims[2] and her husband William Johnson Jr. Huldah Johnson[3] and her husband Robert Ingram Irvin L. Ingram[4] and his wife Mary M. Dempsey Laura Belle Ingram Dempsey[5] and her husband William Henderson Dempsey Fred Rothwell Dempsey[6] and his wife Myrtle Hazel Roop Fred Roosevelt Dempsey[7] and his wife Catherine Josette Wildinger Catherine Ann Dempsey[8] married to Egon Meder David Fridley has uploaded the James Sims biography that I wrote and made it available for download. It can be reached at http://www.fridley.net/sims/. The file is 2.1 MB, so he added a 1.2 MB option for a zipped version of the file. Folks on IE 5 can also open the Word document directly in the browser to read or print. Feel free to pass this information on to others. Please e-mail me with comments, suggestions, corrections, or additions. Thank you. Best regards, Cathy Meder-Dempsey
