Richards' Ferry was one of the few ways to get from Stafford to Fauquier County. The road on the Stafford side was (and still is) called Richards' Ferry Road. I've long wondered which Richards owned the ferry. Since there were William Richardses on both sides of Deep Run, both of whom owned land in the general vicinity of the ferry, I have been unsure of who kept the ferry. Any ideas? Dear Members and Fellow Culpeper Researchers, While I know I have inadvertently included several people on this list who live too far away to do anything physical, I do hope that those of you who live close enough can attend the Town Council meeting in the Bd. of Supervisors' meeting room in the old post office building on Main Street in Culpeper. The meeting is this coming Tuesday, June 11 -- day after tomorrow -- and will begin at 7:00 p. m. Let me bring you up to date as to what has happened with regard to Fairview Cemetery. Priscilla Harper, whose crusade this has been for 3 years already, Aimee Raines of Raines Record Research and a CGS member, and I have attended a special budget hearing meeting of the Town Council, followed by a regularly scheduled meeting of the Public Works Committee. The article about the Public Works Committee meeting can be found at http://www.starexponent.com/ and click on the line under "Rules for Fairview Cemetery finalized" that says "The whole story." We are trying to work with Town Council to catalog and restore the many graves in Fairview Cemetery here in Culpeper that are in really bad shape and have been for years. However, the Town denies that it has any responsibility for the stones, saying that, according to State Code, they are deemed private property of the person who purchased the lot or the descendants of the person, and they should take care of them. I have had many people tell me that they were told when they purchased their lot in Fairview they were told that perpetual care would include care of the gravestone. If you have a lot there and have your ownership certificate for it that states the care of the stone is included, PLEASE make a couple of copies of it and bring it to the meeting Tuesday. If you cannot attend the meeting and have in your possession anything that states they will care for your stone, please mail me a copy! If any of your ancestors left money in his/her will for care of their lot including the stone, please send me a copy of that also. If we can show that people were led to believe the stones would be cared for, then we can get the Town to fulfill what we believe to be their responsibility. The Town, we learned, has money in a Trust Fund at Virginia Commonwealth Trust Company (formerly 2nd Nat'l. Bank) for the express purpose of the care and upkeep and beautification of the cemetery. The Town Manager, Brannon Godfrey, says it would be irresponsible to spend most of the money on repairs of stones and fences; we feel it has been irresponsible of the Town Council not to have used some money every year since the fund was established to care for stones. If they had done that, such a huge sum of money would not be needed now! Here I need to mention that Mr. Godfrey is the latest in a long line of Town Managers hired by Culpeper, and he has only been here a short time, so he is in no way responsible for the lack of care. Once again, if you can -- please attend the meeting. If you can't, please send me copies of anything you have that you think can help us and write the Town Council members so that they will know that there are others besides the 3 of us who are concerned. Sincerely, Donna

My wife is a direct descendant of William Bird (also Byrd) Richards of King and Queen County, and I have been working some on the Colonial Richards family. My wife descends from a half-brother of John Richards of Falmouth and his brother, Captain William Richards, who, I believe, was the father of William Richards of Culpeper. Thus, as Jerrilynn Eby has stated, I am sure William of Culpeper and William of Falmouth and Fredericksburg (son of John of Falmouth) were first cousins. William of Culpeper did live in the piece of land delineated by the Rappahannock River on the north and the Rapidan River on the south. His home was near Richardsville, which today is a tiny village, with a small store and a few homes. The road from Falmouth crossed the Rappahannock at Richards Ferry, and almost certainly made its way to Richardsville and on west to Culpeper. Humphrey Richards was a tobacco merchant and attorney who lived near Petersburg. He was a brother of John Richards of Falmouth and Captain William Richards of King and Queen, whom I believe was the father of William of Culpeper. My wife's g-g-g grandfather was Gabriel Richards, who was a pioneer in Pittsylvania County, VA and later, about 1790 or so, moved to Roane County and McMinn Counties, TN. His mother was Elizabeth (Wilson) Clark Richards, the second wife of Wm. Bird Richards. She was the widow of Jonathan Clark, grandfather of the famous Clark brothers, Generals Jonathan Clark and George Rogers Clark, and their younger brother, Captain (later General) William Clark, co-leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Humphrey Richards and Frances Baylor made their home near Petersburg. I do not know their children. It should be noted that the Richards and Baylors were neighbors in King and Queen, long before the American Revolution. Other families with whom they were associated were the Clarks, Colemans, Birds, Pendletons, etc. I will check my records to see if I can pull out more information on both William of Culpeper and Humphrey Richards. A last note on Humphrey Richards, who had a significant business in Pittsylvania County and northern counties of North Carolina, loaned significant amounts of money to tobacco farmers in south central Virginia and northern North Carolina. He was quite wealthy. I have transcribed many court and public records on his business activities in Pittsylvania County.
While searching the Culpeper List archives, I noticed that there was some interest in this family a few months ago. I can offer some information about them in case that interest still exists. There is a long genealogical footnote about them in The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. XXXVIII (July, 1930), p. 244 ff, which is a good starting point, but ignore the part about William's having been the son of the Marquis of Annandale--that lordly William died in 1721. I don't know where the William Johnston who married Ann Chew came from--possibly Scotland, possibly Gloucester Co., Va. William and Ann's children, according to the VMHB note, were: 1. Joseph, who died young. 2. ROBERT ( who was of interest in prior postings to this list) married, first, Ann Cook and, second, Lucy Ann Overton. I don't remember seeing anything about his marrying Peggy McClanahan. 3. Larkin, married Mary Rogers. 4. Judith, married Robert Farish. 5. John 6. Benjamin, married Dorothy Jones and eventually moved to what became Louisville, Kentucky. One of their sons was the General George Washington Johnston, asked about in a prior posting. "General" was his name (!), not his rank. 7. James, married Mary Ware. 8. William, married, first, Ann Flint and, second Elizabeth Winn. 9. Hannah, married Francis Coleman, the son of William Johnston's third wife, Elizabeth Wyatt Coleman. 10. Richard, who married, first, Dorothy Waller and, second, Ann Smith. 11. Elizabeth, married John Benger. After Ann Chew's death, William married, in 1744, Betty Taylor, widow of James Taylor. She bore William two daughters, Lettice and Sarah. After her death, James Taylor's relatives, in 1749, sued William, probably over whatever was left of James's estate. I haven't found out what became of the two girls. William married for the third time Elizabeth Wyatt Coleman, widow of Samuel Coleman. They had two children, Philip and Catherine. William Johnston was sheriff of Spotsylvania County in 1731 and was a member of the House of Burgesses from Spotsylvania, 1736-40. He was a captain in that county's militia. However, in later years he was a merchant in Caroline County. The only one of this family that I know lived in Culpeper County was William and Ann's son, Richard. Richard's son, Richard Waller Johnston, was born at Culpeper Court House, April 18, 1768, and baptized by Rev. John Thompson. Surities were French and Lucy Strother, Hugh and Fanny Cruder, and Joel Williams. Richard advertised in the Virginia Gazette, April 14, 1768, "a scheme of a Lottery for disposing of a tract of Land, Slaves, &c . . . intended to raise a sum of money to discharge my debts." He gave his address as "Culpeper court-house." The land was in Spotsylvania and the slaves were named John and Judy. In the Gazette, Sept. 21, 1769, still living in Culpeper, Richard advertised for the return of a runaway convict servant and "a Negro boy named Frank, about 13 years old." I don't know how long Richard Johnston lived in Culpeper or whether he was related to any of the other Johnstons who lived there. He married his second wife in Louisa County in 1772 and their two children were born in Caroline. This has gone on 'way too long; I have more information about the family that I can share and I would very much appreciate other information anyone may have, especially about Richard's relationship, if any, to other Culpeper Johnstons. Kind Regards, Joe Johnston Dodge City, Kansas
Hey everyone, I don't know if most of you have it already -- but I ordered the Caroline Co. Court Records from Iberian Publishing by Kimberly Curtis Campbell. I have been researching the JOHNSTON family and their allied relatives. It is helpful.. but not exactly what I was looking for. I think film.. is going to be the best way for me to review transactions related to slaves in detail. I've been trying to understand the JOHNSTONS and their ties as much as I can following them from VA, KY to Missouri. Its a real trick. Caroline Co.
