    1. [VACulpeper] Re: Waite House
    2. Donna S. Boyd
    3. Wasn't that a good show, Linda? The Waite house is one that was owned for many many years by Miss Crimora Waite and her sister, whose name I have forgotten. Hundreds of Culpeper's children attended "Miss Crimora's kindergarten" at that house, and every year there was a picture in the paper of her graduates in their little mortarboards. She was the only librarian Culpeper ever had for forever, it seemed like. I'll check with Rich and Jackie and see what I can find out. They still have their stained glass business. The house has a huge ancient wisteria vine growing over the porch; I think they named the house Wisteria something. That neighborhood is one that is undergoing a revival, with wealthy people who have moved to Culpeper buying the properties and restoring them. Those records may be available elsewhere, as well. If you will tell me whether your subject was in the infantry, artillery, or cavalry, or what unit he was supposed to have been in, that would help me try to find out. I'm assuming cavalry with Mosby, right? Let me know..... Donna

    1. [VACulpeper] Robert Garnett/ Huffman House
    2. Rick Waggener
    3. Donna- Your mention of my ancestor Robert Garnett caught my eye. He had taken control of the "Horseshoe farm" in 1794, deeded to him by his father Anthony Garnett. This is at the horseshoe shaped confluence of the Robinson and Rapidan Rivers. He seems to have purchased other tracts of property before this, which I believe were probably north of this. Perhaps this Huffman house was one of those tracts he obtained earlier. Robert, known as "Robin," seems to have gradually sold off some of the property after 1808. He apparently sold or dispersed everything in 1824, when he is reported to rode on horseback to Kentucky, at the age of 88. I was wondering if there is mention of Robert and any other Garnetts in that Culpeper History Book. Rick Waggener Walnut Creek, California

There were two known contemporary Tilman HUFFMANs (different families) in Culpeper Co., VA during the RW. The St. Mark's Parish entry may just be the defining element needed. 1. [VACulpeper] Mosby's Rangers
    2. Hi All, There was a very interesting bit of information on a home restoration show a few days ago. The house was in Culpeper, VA, built in 1885 by the Waight/Waite family. The people who purchased the home for restoration were Rich and Jacki Kaiser. In this program, Mr. Kaiser showed a register of names and a picture dated 1903. This register contained the names of the attendees to several reunions for the members of Mosby's Rangers (Civil War). The picture was of the men attending the reunion in 1903. I couldn't read any of the names. This program was filmed in about 1998. I am told that my husband's Gaunt/Corbin family had a James Thomas Littleton in the Rangers during the Civil War. I would be very interested to know if anyone is in contact with this Kaiser family in Culpeper, VA. The Kaisers owned a leaded-glass window company. Thanks, Linda Cashen Gaunt

    3. Hugh, If it's any help, the 1972 edition of _Historic Culpeper_, which I have, states "Robert Garnett is said to have been the owner about 1806. For many years it was owned by the Huffman family." (p. 53). I would infer from that, that after Robert Garnett owned it, the Huffmans became owners. Except for the name of the house, there is no mention of the Freemans in this article. They are mentioned in connection with about 6 other homes in the county, however. Donna Boyd
