This is a long shot, but I'm hoping for some help!!! A few years ago I was in the Culpeper Public Library doing research and found an early map (1790's or earlier) showing land grants (I think) along the James River and surrounding areas. I remember finding the name Jesse Lowe as a property owner, but at the time I had no idea my Lowe's had been in VA. I have since found out that this was my 4ggrandfather. I'm wondering if anyone has access to this map showing property owners, and if so could someone verify this for me and get the information off of the map? Any help will be greatly appreciated! (The Culpeper library doesn't have an e-mail address at their web-site). Doreen in Texas softshew@htcomp.net

I will be traveling to the D.C. area on August 19th and would like to make a stop in Culpeper County. I believe one of my ancestors, William Day, may have lived there up until he enlisted in the Revolutionary War in 1776 or 1777. I don't know if he was born there or not. Can anyone tell me where I might have the best chance of finding any information on him if I have a few hours to spend there? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Mike Day

I believe his father's name was Richard. Benjamin had 13 children, of which 7 were boys. Half of his family (4 of the boys) used "Glovier"; the other half used "Glover." I knew both. I was told there was an argument in the family in the middle of the 19th century, and some of them put the "i" in, but I doubt that is correct. The Civil War records list them both ways. Benjamin did have a son named Benjamin, my great-grandfather John's brother. He also had a son named Derrick. I have various records. JDG
A long-standing mystery for me has been how my great grandparents met and married. John N. Johnson was a private in Hood's Texas Brigade during the War Between the States, one of that famous unit's original enlistees. He was born in AL, but, best I can tell, was living in MS at the onset of the conflict. John was captured as a POW in the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864 and was paroled in Ashland in April 1865. One month later, he married Elizabeth Churchill Crutcher, daughter of Coleman and Penelope Allen Crutcher of Culpeper. After reading more about the activities of Hood's Texas Brigade, I understand that he had plenty of opportunity to interact with the people of Culpeper, their camp was nearby and they were aided by the people in the town. Were there other marriages between the soldiers and the local Virginia girls? Has information been compiled on these wartime romances? How can I find out more about the possible origins of my great grandparents' relationship? Where would I be most likely to find a picture of this soldier, or of this couple? Their marriage lasted until her death in Jan 1880. Together they produced 6 children. Their oldest son William Coleman Johnson remained in Fauquier County with his Crutcher grandparents when John left Virginia abt 1882 to return to MS. Are any of his descendants still in the Culpeper/Fauquier area? I would love to correspond with them. I would also like to find out about Elizabeth's brother John Allen Crutcher who was killed in the war in 1864. He is buried in the Red Hill Cemetery. Where in Culpeper Co. is that? Does anyone know what CSA unit he served in? Thanks to anyone who can shed more light on these puzzles. I believe that Will Book G is one that mysteriously disappeared from the shelves in the Records Room some time ago. Dee, do you know where your Roes originated before your grandfather ended up in Indiana? The Roes in my line began in Albany, NY, and then some went to Ohio, which is where I lose track of that branch. Donna
To update everybody, Harold and I went to the Kaisers' home and took pictures of each page of the book mentioned in the TV show. I am in the process of transcribing that information now, and hopefully when Teresa Kelley returns from vacation, we will get it on the Culpeper Genealogical Society web site. The URL for that web site is http://www.rootsweb.com/~vacgs This morning I found in the Rootsweb mailing list a URL that I thought I'd check out, and boy, did I hit pay dirt!!! For all those wondering if your ancestor fought with Mosby's Rangers, check it out: http://www.mosocco.com/mosby.html Have fun! Donna Boyd
