    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/QBC.2ACI/2253.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Hi Cynthia, Thanks for writing again. The country of origin of William Harris, b. ca. 1750 Culpeper Co., Va., d. 1748 Wilkes Co., NC, remains a stubborn mystery that has refuses to be solved. There is a famous line of Harrises in colonial Virginia that extends back to John Harris, tobacco planter, and older brother Thomas Harris, co-founder of Henrico, Va., second English settlement in America. Their father, Sir William Harris, of Crixe, England, was a London merchant and an original stockholder in the Virginia Company of London which financed the founding of Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in America. Descendants of this famous Harris line are in central Virginia when our ancestor was there, and it’s tempting to speculate our ancestor is a member of this famous family, but alas there is no proof. We know a William Harris was in Culpeper Co., Va., when the county formed in 1749. Whether this William was the father of our William is not known. Family historian Pam Stone says John Harris, b. ca. 1727 in Spotsylvania Co., Va., is possibly the father of our William. This John Harris married Hannah Stevens or Stephens on April 3, 1784, in Spotsylvania Co. Ms. Stone cites a child of the couple, William Harris, b. 1752. John Harris also had a brother, William, as well as brothers James, Robert and perhaps Job. Two other family historians, Earl Dean Harris and Mary L. Gillespie Burt, in “Alleghany County Heritage,” published in 1983 by the Alleghany Historical-Genealogical Society, said our Harris family is of English and Welsh origin but provide no additional details. Harris and Burt drew upon research by noted Wilkes County historian the late Mrs. W.O. Absher. Note that Jacob Harris had a brother, Squire. Also, Jacob’s nephew, Henderson, my ggreat-grandfather, was referred to in the 1850 Census as Squire. Also note that a family of Kannadays were living in Culpeper County, Va., at its founding. I have not yet been able to check on any possible connection to our Kannadays. There are several names in Culpeper at that time that match names of people living near our ancestor William in Wilkes County in the late 1790s, and that’s a subject of future research. Good to hear from you. Happy Harris Hunting. Stephen Harris

Surnames: Harris - Kannaday Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/QBC.2ACI/2253.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Well this is all making sense to the now. That validates a lot of information for me. What I can give you is that Jacob and Jane had at least 10 children according to the 1850 Letcher Co. Census. Some of the children were born in Virginia and some are listed as So. Carolina and the younger ones were listed as Kentucky. Listed are Nancy C. Harris b. 1830 m. Wm. Bentley, Frances Harris b. 1832, Squire Harris b. 1834 m. Nancy Bentley, Mary Harris b. 1836, John Harris b. 1838 m. Anna "unknown", William Harris b. 1840 m. Martha Bates, Jemima b. 12/13/1842 m. Benjamin Franklin Curnutte, Enoch Ashbury Harris b. 1844, George W. Harris b. 1846 and Rachel Arminta b. 6/12/1850 (just in time to be recorded on the census at 3 mos. who married Reubin David Curnutte. It is through Rachel that I am related to the Harris's. Rachel had George Sherman on 04/11/1869, Estella on 07/07/1873 (my great-grandmother), Berdella (Aunt Berd) on 06/02/1876, Nathaniel Everet on 10/24/1878 (Spanish Ame! rican War and died in the great influenza epidemic in 1919). Estella was married twice. First to Mr. Lones and then to John Wesley Bresler who was my Great Granfather. Estella and John had Sharon Dale Bresler (my Great Uncle) and Lillian Alberta Bresler b. March 1, 1907 (my Grandmother) m. Ernest Dane Reedy who had my mother Natalie Dale Reedy m. Edwin John Freistuhler who had Cynthia Ann. It is through my grandmother Lillian that I got all of my basis for starting my research. That women had dates in her memory that I could not believe. They were always accurate dates. She was an excellent source of information. She also told me that the Kannadays were from Ireland. I so want to trace them back there. It was my understanding from her that the Harris's were Ulster Irish (transplanted Scots). What is the information you have been able to gather on there country of origin?

Silas, b. ca. 1775, d. before 1860, m. Dec. 7, 1801, to Edith Franklin (b. 1872, d. before 1870) in Surry County. 2. Female, b. ca. 1787. 3. Mary, b. ca. 1790, m. Feb. 16, 1822, to Isom Dickerson in Wilkes County. 4. Louisa “Lucy,” b. ca. 1790, d. ca. 1860, m. Feb. 16, 1816, to Daniel Fields in Wilkes. 5. William Lewis, b. March 4, 1794 or ca. 1804, d. Feb. 27, 1898, m. Dec. 21, 1826 to Hannah Smith (b. Nov. 28, 1799, d. Sept. 20, 1879) in Wilkes, bur. Antioch Church. 6. Margaret, b. ca. 1795, m. Feb. 1, 1820, to Joseph Fields in Wilkes. 7. Squire, b. ca. 1797, m. Aug. 25, 1820, to Miriam Phillips in Wilkes, moved away. 8. James, b. ca. 1799, m. Aug. 26, 1820, to Frances Fields in Wilkes, moved to Surry 1860. 9. N.H. (male), b. ca. 1802, moved away. 10. Jacob, b. ca. 1803, m. Aug. 29, 1827, to Jane Kannaday in Wilkes, moved away. Family historian Mary Gillespie Burt offers this list: 1. Silas b. 1775, m. Edith Franklin on Dec. 7, 1801 in Surry. 2. Mary b. 1790, m. Isom Dickerson on Feb. 16, 1822 in Wilkes. 3. Louisa b. 1790, m. Daniel Fields on Feb. 16, 1816 in Wilkes. 4. William Lewis b. March 4, 1794, m. Hannah Smith on Dec. 21, 1826, in Wilkes (the date of the marriage license). 5. Margaret b. 1795, m. Joseph Fields on Feb. 1, 1820. 6. Squire b. 1797, m. Miriam Phillips on Aug. 25, 1820 in Wilkes (however, the marriage license is dated Aug. 26). 7. James b. 1799, m. Frances Fields on Aug. 26, 1820 (the marriage-license date). 8. Jacob b. 1803, m. Jane Kannaday on Aug. 29, 1827 (the marriage-license date). 9. male, no other record, may have died young. 10. female, no other record, may have died young." Also: "William Harris ... claim(ed) 200 acres on the Big Elkin Creek adjacent to his old line, meaning his current or past property, and adjoining the property of William Canady, according to Wilkes County land grant file No. 2681. Warrant/Entry No. 1343 places the date of the claim at Feb. 10, 1815. ... Grant No. 3032 dates the formal Wilkes acquisition as Nov. 30, 1816. Squire Harris, likely William’s son, is listed a member of the survey team. Squire was about 18 at the time of the claim, according to the Perkins and Burt lists. William Canady may be linked to Jane Kannaday, the wife of one of William's sons, Jacob. In her 1981 article, Burt said the Kannadays lived in the same area of Wilkes as the Harrises. Since men of that age often looked no farther than the next homestead for a wife, it is reasonable to suspect Jacob married a Canady (or Kannaday) daughter." Also: "Jacob and Jane Kannady moved to Letcher County, Ky." I hope this helps. I also have a photo of Jacob & Jane from a descendant. Do you have further information about Jacob & Jane? All the best, Stephen Harris
