In Goodspeed, The Goodspeed Histories of Sabastian County, Arkansas, orig pub 1889, repub by Woodward and Stinson Printing Co., Columbia, Tennessee, 1977, p 1327, it states that Nathan HUFFMAN was born near Culpeper Court House. Nathan, son of Benjamin (Tillman, Henry-1734 immigrant/Little Fork Group) was born 31 Oct 1801, Culpeper Co., VA. As "near" is a relative term, I am not sure just where the Benjamin HUFFMAN family was located at the time. There is a standing house about 15 miles west of Culpeper (town) which is known as the FREEMAN-HUFFMAN house. Since Tillman HUFFMAN m2. c1756 Mrs. Margaret FREEMAN, it may be in this home that Nathan was born. Nathan's mother, wife of Benjamin, is unknown. It is believed that her first name was Margaret/Peggy. The 1800 specific location of Benjamin's family would be of great help. Does someone have access to Culpeper documents which might shed some light on this issue? Best regards, Hugh

(Name not stated) William Cardwell married Famariah Field soon afterwards and they move to the Franklin/Mercer/Bullitt County area of Kentucky by 1796. Henry Field and Abraham Field also moved to this section of Kentucky. William Cardwell stated in depostion that he married the sister of Abraham Field. Henry and Abraham Field are both from Culpeper. Henry Field is reported to have married an unknown Cardwell for his first wife. There is an obvious connection to the Field family and Culpeper County, Va. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/QBC.2ACI/2253.1.1.1.2.1 Message Board Post: Hi Mary, All we know about my William Harris ancestor's (b. ca. 1750 Culpeper Co., VA, d. 1848 Wilkes Co., NC) time in Virginia is that he enlisted in the Revolutionary War at the Culpeper Co. Courthouse in January 1776, according to his Revolutionary War pension applications, and he was born in Culpeper Co., according to his obituary. William Harris first appears in Wilkes County in 1784 in a tax list. His son Silas told the 1850 U.S. Census he was born in Virginia. The rest of William's life in Virginia remains a mystery that refuses to be cracked. We know a fellow Revolutionary War soldier from Culpeper County, Nathaniel Harris, lived on Block or Black Water Run, a tributary of the Rappahanock River in northern Culpeper. There was a William Harris who bought land on Negro Run, a neighboring tributary to Black Water Run, when Culpeper was forned in 1749, but there is no know nconnection to my ancestor William. Family historian Pam Ross speculates my ancestor William's father is John Harris, b. ca. 1727 in Spotsylvania Co., Va. John Harris married Hannah Stevens or Stephens on April 3, 1784, in Spotsylvania Co. Ms. Ross cites a child of the couple as William Harris, b. 1752. John Harris also had a brother, William, as well as brothers James, Robert and perhaps Job, Ross said. I hope you find this of interest. Thanks for writing. Stephen Harris
Sorry, forgot to address the good folks on the Culpeper list.... John -----Original Message----- From: John Morris [SMTP:johnm@inna.net] Sent: Monday, December 30, 2002 12:09 PM To: 'Deb Koplen' Cc: VASPOTSY-L@rootsweb.com; Subject: RE: [VACulpeper] Library of Virginia Deb, I share your concerns and can sympathize with you and others who live outside the Commonwealth, as I am a user of the library from time to time AND I live here in VA... My family's roots go back to the mid 1600's in the state. including Culpeper and Spotsylvania Counties... I see it not only at the LVA but local libraries who are cutting hours, days and personnel these days..... Budgets cuts are hitting every State Activity and Agency with a VENGEANCE.... Education on all levels has taken nearly a 20% cut across the board, public services are down 15% or more and highway and building construction projects have been placed on a hold or even discontinued, which has put many out of work in the construction business's. This means that the suppliers who provide the state and it's contractors with materials and supplies are being left out in the cold with supplies of things and contracts that they entered into in order to meet the states needs which now have dried up.. And not to overlook the personnel cuts and layoffs in just about EVERY State Agency which are in the neighborhood of 10-20%... Unfortunately the Library's (State and Local) are at the bottom of the list for monies and near the top of the list of places to be cut based on importance to the populace and operation of the state. So, Governor Warner had to make cuts where it would do the least harm to the overall state operations....Do not put the blame on the local communities and counties and Legislature and Representatives... The localities are being cut short of monies and the elected officials can only squeeze so much money out of the turnip. Which would you rather have, a Library or a Fire/Police/Rescue Department and Schools? So it would be a good idea to express your views to the Governors' Office in Richmond also... But in retrospect; during recent elections, the majority of residents have shown that THEY feel that it is the STATE'S RESPONSIBILITY TO FIND THE FUNDING and not to raise taxes to meet the requirements. Virginia has only a 4.5% sales tax and compared to states like New York with a 8% Sales Tax, we are getting off real easy. So, the unfortunate and realistic bottom line is; that THE RESIDENTS bear the blame, burden and responsibility for these cuts and situation that the state is in at this time....An increase of only 1/2 percent IN THE SALES TAX (that's only 50 cents on the hundred dollars, less than the cost of a candy bar) would not kill us: BUT it would go a long way towards meeting the Budgetary/Operational needs of the Commonwealth. I for one, would not feel bad or hesitant to the paying of a charge to use the library's resources.. Some states require that you have a card or number in order to sign on and use the resources. and they charge both in and out of state residents a fee for these services. It is not the ideal situation, but if it means that we can do the research that we need and keep these places open; then maybe it is a useable option. Just my 2 cents worth.... I just posted a message that was a copy of my letter to both the representatives of Culpeper County, VA. I am sorry that the CC version did not show who it was originally sent to. It was meant for the members of the list to spur them to write the representatives for the counties/areas in Virginia that they are interested in. I am not a resident of your district. I am not even a resident of the State of Virginia. My ties to the state, however, date from my mother's birth in Richardsville, and then all the way back to Jamestown. I am one of those darn genealogists. I know that many of the cuts affecting the Library of Virginia are already in place, and very little can be done to reverse them. But I wanted to make sure that you knew that LOV is the reason that I spent over a week in Virginia last year, and am planning to spend a week there this year. My money is new money to Virginia, as is the money spent by many more genealogists. When you are contemplating additional cuts, make sure you consider that the Library of Virginia brings in money, not just spends it. I am sure that an economist could make some estimate from the use records of the Library just how much money the Library brings to the state, even if it does not reflect directly on the Library's books. I implore you take my spending, and the spending of all of the other genealogists who have roots in Virginia, into account when any additional cuts to the Library are contemplated. And maybe consider reversing some of the current cuts. -------------------------------------------------------------------- I hope your Christmas is a wonderful and joyous occasion, and may your new year be as bright as the lone star that led the wise men on the first Christmas night. I am researching the lines of George M. SMITH. The information I have obtained, from the History of Sangamon Co. is as follows: He was born on April 23, 1785 in Virginia. His parents moved when he was a child to Henry Co., KY. George M. SMITH and Matlilda DOWDALL were married August 14, 1810 in Shelby Co., KY and afterwards lived some time in Henry Co., KY where they had four children, moving in 1824 to Jennings Co, IN where one child was born, returning to Henry Co. where one child was born. They moved to Sangamon Co, IL in March, 1834 in what is now Island Grove. He died February 27, 1842. I have not been able to identify the ancestors of George M. SMITH. I have also been unable to identify the ancestors of Brawner DOWDALL, who was the father of Matilda DOWDALL. Matilda's mother was Alice HOLMES. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
