Researching families LUCAS & MOORE. William LUCAS 1781-1866 married Anna MOORE in Culpeper Co. in 1882. She was the daughter of Abraham MOORE.
My ggrandfather William Acy RAYNOR b. in Albemarle County married my ggrandmother Mattie Lewis HITT b. Sept. 9 1879 in Culpeper. Mattie's father is Festus C. Hitt, b. March 1834 in Rappahannock, d. February 1921 in Culpeper. According to the marriage certificate for William and Mattie, William's parents are John K. RAYNOR and Mary A. I have no other information on them. I'm really researching Albemarle and Rappahannock Counties now, but thought I'd throw this out in case it entwined with someone else's work.
I'm researching anyone of Everett ancestry. Sally Chirlin

I have posted this before, but will try again. Nancy Shackelford from Culpeper County married Thomas B. Atkins of Orange County--not sure of year but around 1809. I have been unable to get a line on Nancy, but someone suggested Nancy was sometimes a nickname for Ann. Does anyone know of a Shackelford family with a daughter named Ann b. about 1785-95? Thank you. Mary Miller

For those of you interested in the Culpeper Men please try the sites I have listed below: http://www.liming.org/nwta/index.html (lots of links here) http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/us-culp.html http://www.susieashcom.com/northern-virginia-area.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~vacgs/researchguide.htm >From my files: They adopted uniforms consisting of hunting shirts of strong, brown lines, dyed with an extract of the leaves of trees (probably the broad of oak leaves). On the breast of each shirt was worked in large white letters the words: "LIBERTY OR DEATH." (A wag of the times said that this was too severe for him, but that he would enlist if they could change the motto to "Liberty or be Crippled." Their flag had a rattlesnake with 13 rattles, coiled in the center, read to strike. Underneath it were the words: "DON'T TREAD ON ME." On either side were the words: "LIBERTY OR DEATH." And at the top "THE CULPEPER MINUTE MEN." The Minute Men took part in the Battle of Great Bridge, the first Revolutionary battle on Virginia soil. No sooner were they formed than the companies of Culpeper Minute Men were absorbed into regiments of the Continental Line, and by Act of Assembly in October 1776, they were dissolved and merged into the militia. Several original Culpeper Minute Men were sufferers at Valley Forge. "The Original" Culpeper Minute Men Battalion By Myron E. Dear Listers, My concern for this List has to do with two families: one is BRUCE from Stafford as well as Culpeper. Anne BRUCE married James Francis DRAKE about 1768. They lived in Culpeper when they produced Thomas Drake (1768) and Elizabeth Betsy Bruce Drake (1770). It is likely that EBBD baby-sat for Henry BRUCE who also lived in Culpeper. They were life-long friends as well as cousins. John DRAKE, an Englishman and father of JFD, lived in Culpeper for a time. Anne BRUCE DRAKE died about 1775. JFD married a woman named Winney ____ and the DRAKES moved to Scott Co., KY where JFD died about 1808. The BRUCES of Stafford are well known and have a daughter, Ann, about whose marriage there is no record. But their records show she died about 1775. I have been unable to find any official record of the Drakes in Culpeper. It is only old family documents that put them there. Tom

I am helping a neighbor with Culpeper roots. They are researching Stringfellow and associated lines which include: Blackwell, Champe, Cooke, Eustace, Gaines, Herndon, Lee, Nalle, Pendleton, Steptoe, Willis and many others in that area. If you have any connections that relate to the Stringfellow line, I would appreciate being able to pass along the information to them as they do not have a computer. Thank you joannie
