    1. Re: [VACULPEP] Stokeley Towles Will/ Brumfield Parish Inquiry
    2. In 1752, another parish would be created in Culpeper County: the western half of the county (including all of what is now Madison County, all except the extreme northeastern corner of Rappahannock, and the northwest corner of modern Culpepr County) became the new parish of Bromfield, while the remaining region of the county (the majority of modern Culpeper county) remained as St. Mark's Parish. The creation of Bromfield Parish left many of the inhabitants of St. Mark's parish without a convenient church, and the rest of the year 1752 saw a flurry of activity in producing new places of worship. As a stopgap measure, services were ordered held in the county courthouse for a time after the creation of the new parish, with sufficient "Benches or Seats" tobe provided by the churchwardens. Have a nice day! June CPZB4@aol.com

    3. Dear Listers and Rick, As a descendant of Stokely Towles I would be interested in seeing what you have. Not only did I name the hero in a book, Stokely Towles, but also I stumbled into Don Towles, a descendant of ST when I was in London, England one day. Don is retired. He was a writer for the "Louisville Courier Journal" and lives in Louisville, KY, where I was born and raised. Included is a transcription of the Will of Stokeley Towles (c.1690-1757), which I have copied to this message for anyone else who might be interested. Although I had previously seen a general description of the will, I had not personally seen the entire transcription before. 3. Hello List: I have never written into this list but always am hoping to find someone that has the answer to our family's research for our BROWNS. For generations we have been searching for the Father of : ANDREW BROWN Born Sept. 22, 1769 in Culpeper Co., Va.---died 1860 Elbert Co., GEORGIA. Married Margarette Adams, born Sept. 10, 1780, Va.---died May 1860 Elbert Co., Ga. (probably d/o James Adams and Jane Cunningham?). Andrew though born in Culpeper Co., VA. came to live in Elbert Co., GA. He is buried at Holly Springs Baptist Church in Elbert Co., Ga. and lies beneath a DAR monument although the Daughter's have never allowed anyone in the line into the DAR under his name. In the reconstructed 1790 Georgia census we find a William and an Andrew Brown in Elbert Co., Ga. Many of the "old" researchers of the line have believed that WILLIAM is the father of Andrew Brown. That has yet to be proven. Andrew and Margarette Adams Brown did name their first born son William A. Brown. Here is a list of their children (I have certified Bible Records from the state archives):P 1. William A. Brown born 1795 2. Dr. Hiram Brown 1797 3. James L. Brown 1799 4. Adam Brown 1800 5. Henry Brown 1802 6. Sarah G. Brown 1805 7. Wiley Brown 1807 8. Martha H. "Patsy" Brown 1809 9. Nancy Brown 1811 10.Milly Franklin Brown 1813 11. Andrew Jackson Brown 1816 (my GGG Grandfather who married Sarah Ann Rucker, d/o Barden and Nancy Alexander Rucker. Barden Rucker the s/o Rev. Soldier William Rucker of Va. transplanted to Elbert Co., Ga., he the son of William Rucker I, s/o Peter Rucker the immigrant. Nancy Alexander the d/o William Alexander, Rev. Soldier and Frances "Frankie" Rucker (also desc. from Peter Rucker). 12. Roland Jefferson Brown (twin of Andrew J. Brown) 1816 13. Margaret Brown 1819 14 John Willis Brown 1821 Confederate Soldier 5th Ga. Militia. If anyone on this list has any information on this BROWN family from Culpeper Co., Va. please contact me or post to the list. Thank you Karen T. 3. I belong to the Cook County Illinois list. They have posted several messages concerning the Heritage Quest website that is available at some local libraries at no charge. I have not been to my local library in Maryland but for those of you who are near one maybe you could check it out. I know that Virginia is more progressive when it comes to research at their libraries. The state of Maryland does not have much available. The posts also state that most of the years are indexed. This would really be a big help for our genealogy research

I am a mother of 4 and grandmother of 10. I work outside of the home during the day. I am a list Mom to several other Mailing Lists. I am very actively involved in my own family research. Several of my lines either migrated to or through Culpeper County, VA. I am a hands on List Mom, meaning I keep track of what is going on with the mailing list and if you are ever in need of me during the day, while at work, you can reach me at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net. If I do not respond to you in a timely manner you can reach me at Kathleen.Burnett@era.com My goal for your list is to keep it a safe place for you to research post and share information regarding your ancestors of Culpeper Co., VA. Safe meaning a place where you are not subject to postings other than posting related to the subject of the list. For your information, the VACULPEP Mailing List has 415 members, 327 of these are subscribed to the Regular List and 88 to the Digest List. I have very few rules on my lists; the main one is to treat your fellow members as you would like to be treated; Roll Calls will be called by me, with a beginning date and an ending date and the posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc. (in other words - Spam) is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me, KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net If you would like to visit the archived messages for this list you may go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com and type in VACULPEP from there you can search by date. There is a great Rootsweb site, Password Central; you can go to if you want to find out what Rootsweb lists you are a member of or need to unsubscribe from a list, just follow the instructions. http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ I wish for each of you a success with your most difficult genealogical mystery and I look forward to getting to know you. 2. Tillman b. c1735 would be 18 in 1753 when his parents, Henry and Margaret (Huettenhen) HUFFMAN, were living in the Little Fork community. There were 12 German families in the community at the time (1748). A search for an eligible female might reveal who Tilman married as his first wife and mother of his children. Tillman is said to have served in the RW with Revolutionary Troops of Culpeper. St. Mark's Parish location. By 1781 Tillman was 46. There is a Tilman HUFFMAN listed in the Jan 1781 Culpeper Co., VA Militia Roster. Also there are three entries in Gwathmey's Historical Register of Virginians in the Revolution, 1775 -1783, p 399. 1. Re: [VACulpeper] Fw: Thompson/Roll Call
    2. I am interested in your information on the Thompson family in Culpeper Co., Virginia. Some of our Thompson/Powell family legend includes Culpeper as a possible site of origin. My ancestors were George Thompson and Francis Powell (daughter of Powell and Pickett, born about 1770 in Virginia). (Legend also has it that the Pickett was a relative of General George Pickett). They walked over the Cumberland Gap to Kentucky in the early 1800s from Virginia. They had 3 children and I only know that my ancestor (their son) was Benjamin Anderson Thompson, born on February 18, 1799 in Virginia Legend also has it that there was a relationship with John Rolfe and Pocahantas..I speculate that it was a Powell connection. If anything now or later makes a connection in your search I would be delighted to hear from you.
