Hi What were the typical plantation's like in the mid-1700's around Old Rag MTN.? Was slavery in use abundently in the area? are there any old Slave schedules from Say 1740-1749 ? Any old Tihable Lists from that time period? I am looking for the Bradley/Lillard Families.... Thanks Becki
Hello I am looking for examples of architecture from the early to mid 1700's in the Orange County/Culpepper County (Old Rag Mtn area). I am researching what life was like for the bradley and Lillard families growing up. The two children John Bradley and Sarah Lillard married quite young. Sarah was only around 13/14 yo. Was this typical? Lawrence Bradley is my supposed gr-gr-gr-gr-gr-gr-gr grandfather. I am interested in what type of housing exiasted there? Were the farms log cabins, or frame houses? How big were the average homes on Old Rag Mountain? Were the Bradley's and Lillard's pretty well off? I believe that Lawrence may have also owned a Mill of some sort. I believe his wife's name ws Elizabeth..... Any info from the area would be appreciated...I am trying to piece to gether what the area was like. Rebecca Snyder
Is there anyone in Culpeper County who would be willing to look at the original Will of William Beazley (transcribed below) and see if the ? after Elizabeth's and David's names might possibly be "Stern"? Evidentally, it was difficult to read by the transcriptionist. I have highlighted the two names in question in red below. Elizabeth's name is in the body of the will, and David's name is at the end as a witness. Thanks. - Julie Will-- Transcribed by Lesley Carter I William Beazley of the County of Culpeper and state of Virginia do make and ordain this my will and testament as follows: First I leave to my wife Ellie Beazley five negroes named John, Temple, Robert, Edmund and Polly during her natural life and after her death to be sold on a credit of twelve months and the money arising to be equally divided among my children in their lives. In re-reading this part of the settlement very closely, I do now believe that Matilda is Matilda Hume, wife of Albert Kennedy. They seem to be listed with other Hume descendants, including Granville Kennedy and wife Mildred, who I believe to be a sister to Matilda Hume. Albert Kennedy and wife Matilda Hume are buried at Elmwood in Orange CO and are cited frequently in a book called THE FANNY HUME DIARY OF 1862 and published by the Orange County Historical Society. I am still very interested in hearing from anyone who is researching this family. Thank you.
I can't answer your questions. Mathilda Kennedy seems to be listed as a descendant of Sarah Wharton. Sarah was the daughter of Jane Sparks and her husband Thomas Wharton. She was a half-sister to the Henry Towles of the will, as they had the same mother. Henry was half-brother to my ancestor, Lucy Garnett, because they had the same father. As such, Sarah and my Lucy were step-sisters and not directly related. I have not done any work on Sarah's family. Is the Albert Kennedy and wife Mathilda cited in the above entitled settlement the same Albert Kennedy and wife who are buried at Elmwood Farm in Orange CO, VA? If so, is the Albert Kennedy the son of Rev. War Veteran James Kennedy who settled in Pulaski CO, KY? I am also interested in connecting these family to Albert and Mathilda Kennedy's son James Fontaine Hume Kennedy and family. Will be glad to exchange information on this branch of the family.

Here is the transcription of the Clark vs. Towles settlement from 1844 or 1845. If you are a descendant of Stokeley Towles, this is a pretty remarkable document. The suit is in regards to a dispute over the will and estate of Stokeley's youngest son Henry, whose mother was Jane Sparks, and who had died about 8 years earlier in about 1836. Henry, who had no children, ended up with his father's plantation and a large share of the estate. In his will, he left everything to the descendants of his full sister Mary (Towles) Clark. The suit sets aside Henry's will, and redistributes the estate to all of direct descendants of Henry's father Stokeley. As mentioned with the other Towles documents, they all were apparently originally transcribed by William B. Newman around 1930. He used the document to pretty much put together the family of Stokeley and the descendants of each child. The document is basically divided by the descendants of each child. Mr. Newman wrote the names of the applicable child at the side of the various sections. I have taken his notes and put them in parentheses, in spaces over the various sections. The spaces were not in the original document. I don't know if it will all fit in a regular message, so I will break it into three parts. Rick Waggener Walnut Creek, California James Clark Administrator with the will annexed of Mary Clark, Deceased (Plaintiffs) Vs. I am seeking info on John Blackwell. His will was dated Feb. 13, 1769. The will was exhibited to the Culpeper County court by Isabella Blackwell, widow on May 17, 1770. Court records mention a son named Thomas and other minor children. Any info would be very appreciated. Vicki Blackwell Norvell
