Rueben HUFMAN, RW Soldier of Culpeper Co., VA Rueben was a son of John (John, 1714 immigrant). In January 1781 Rueben was drafted along with 105 other Culpeper militiamen for service with the Virginia forces then under the command of General Lafayette. The details of the service of these men is vague. It has been suggested that a look at Rueben's record might reveal the details. Rueben has a DAR record and I suspect a National Archives file. Therefore, I am seeking the military records that maybe available through the many subscribers to the addressee Lists above who are descendants of Rueben HUFMAN. Best regards, Hugh
Hello, Jpoplains and list, In a message sent earlier today I said.......... "I believe that 1794 John O'Neale marries Juda Suttle 4/8/1794. min. John Swindler...... ..... remarried after Margaret Barton O'Neale died." I should have said "remarried after Rachael Wood O'Neale died." You can find more information on this family at The O'Neal Genealogy Association Website at <http://www.onealwebsite.com/> Hope this helps you sort everything out. Hello, Jpoplains, I believe most of the persons mentioned below belong to my O'Neal Family. These three were brothers: 1807 Daniel O'Neel marries Sarah Jennings 1/15/1807 min Reuben Finnell 1807 Barnett (Bennet) O'Neal marries Sally Embry 8/6/1807 min. Lewis Conner (Baptist) 1808 John O'Neal marries Elizabeth Embry 9/18/1808 min Lewis Conner (Baptist) They were the children of John O'Neale and Margaret Barton of Maryland. These brothers all traveled as adults to Kentucky. I believe that 1794 John O'Neale marries Juda Suttle 4/8/1794. min. John Swindler was their father who remarried after Margaret Barton O'Neale died. She later moved to Ohio and married a Russell. After he died she is found living in the household of a younger O'Neal, most likely a son. I also believe that Judah Suttle was actually Judy/Judith SETTLE. There were no Suttles listed in the census during this time frame, but there were numerous Settle families. You can find more information on this family at The O'Neal Genealogy Association Website at <http://www.onealwebsite.com/> Hope this helps you sort everything out. Please contact me if you have further questions regarding this family. Cuz'n, John John W. Hi Rebecca, I would start with the Virginia State Library and then go to the Historical Society that isn't too far from the Library in Richmond. Phyllis
Greetings: I am looking for any information re the family (ancestral or descendant) of Colonel Phillip Roates (Roots) Thompson (d. 1837). He is the son of Rev. John Thompson. Colonel Phillip R. Thompson came to the Kanawha Valley from Culpeper, VA sometime in 1817 and settled at the mouth of Coal River (present day St. Albans, Kanawha County, WV, it was originally known as Coalsmouth). On the Culpeper, VA site I did locate a Phillip R. Thompson in the 1810 census. I'd appreciate any info. I have other Culpeper Thompsons and would like to see if there is a ancestral connection for them. Thank you-- Caroline Lyles
Hi Rebecca: Yes, Richmond does seem to have everything that the counties have. However, Richmond's records are on microfilm and sometimes hard to read and copy well. During my visit two years ago, I found it easier to collect the records in Richmond, especially as I also had several counties to search. But the copies I brought back from the individual courthouses have proved to be more useful. Also, the visits to each courthouse add the "flavor" of the area in a way that the very well organized and comfortable surroundings in Richmond can't. My opinion! That is wonderful!!
Hi, Well, I was panning to be in the Culpeper/Fauquier/Madison counties area May 28-31; however, it was a sidetrip to a visit to my sister, Marlene, in Maryland. Sadly, her mother-in-law recently suffered a stroke and needs round-the-clock care for awhile longer. My visit would have just have been an imposition at this time, so I am postponing it until Fall. I am still taking the time off from work, so I get some time too catch up on gen research, correspondence, etc. to the extent that I can do it from home. Traci Wilson-Kleecamp kindly posted a link to the Orange Co., VA mail list last week for historical record data located in Fredericksburg. I have just found an assortment of BOWEN citations. One has some interesting data, so I am going to order the full record. The record title is COLVIN vs. TUTT &c" and the year recorded is shown as "1828?" with a record ID of 52-2. It has several "Family" references, among them (my caps), "James BOWEN, brother of Robert BOWERS by their mother." Other Family references include: "James TUTT, son in law of Benjamin COLVIN," "Benjamin TUTT, brother of James TUTT, "Ann BOWEN, wife of James BOWEN - 1827" (probably Ann T. FOUSHEE). Of course, I am now very interested in the lineage of the referenced Robert BOWERS...his mother and her husbands. If anyone can assist, please let me know. I am preparing a letter to request this full record and will transcribe it upon receipt. I will probably post it to the message board, which is gatewayed to this list. Kathleen Burnett has a great ideal about putting flowers on lone graves, and we all should follow her example. However, I want to tell you about a man who does this every day of his life and goes about the southeastern United States visiting small, untended and overgrown cemeteries and not only putting flowers on them but he also reclaims the ones which have become overgrown and neglected. The amazing thing is, this man does this mostly by himself. His name is Owen Kiser. from Salt Lick Kentucky. His email address is okiser@yesconnect. if you would like to contact him.

Rebecca, I have John Bradley and Sarah Lillard in my database, but no marriage date or children. Are you willing to share their descendants? I am a descendant of James Lillard and Keziah Bradley. It is believed that Lawrence Bradley was married to Elizabeth Lillard, d/o Jean "John" Lillard and Sarah Glassel, his first wife. I'm not sure that has been proven. Lawrence and Elizabeth Bradley were the parents of (1) Augustine Bradley who married Elizabeth Lillard; (2) John Bradley who married Sarah Lillard; and (3) Keziah Bradley who married James Lillard. It is believed that Elizabeth, Sarah and James Lillard were siblings, and possibly the children of Benjamin Lillard and Elizabeth Lightfoot. Regards, Lillie Dodson Marshall Hello I am looking for examples of architecture from the early to mid 1700's in the Orange County/Culpepper County (Old Rag Mtn area). I am researching what life was like for the bradley and Lillard families growing up. The two children John Bradley and Sarah Lillard married quite young. Sarah was only around 13/14 yo. Was this typical? Lawrence Bradley is my supposed gr-gr-gr-gr-gr-gr-gr grandfather. I am interested in what type of housing exiasted there? Were the farms log cabins, or frame houses? How big were the average homes on Old Rag Mountain? Were the Bradley's and Lillard's pretty well off? I believe that Lawrence may have also owned a Mill of some sort. I believe his wife's name ws Elizabeth..... Any info from the area would be appreciated...I am trying to piece to gether what the area was like. Rebecca Snyder
