There are a couple of tricks you can use to remember when to use "that" or "who." Would you ever say "THAT married Hugh Jones."? Or would you say "WHO married Hugh Jones?"? The latter, of course, would be correct and probably no one ever would make a mistake between the use of the two pronouns in this case. Another hint is to remember that WHO is used for people not things. Example: "The chair that sat in the corner of our living room had been my father's favorite." Again, probably no one would ever use WHO to refer to a chair. I'm a retired English teacher; I've got a million of 'em!!! Sally
The use of 'to' and 'too' are constantly being misused too. Please explain their uses.
Sally, Yes, I hear people use, "He's the one that married..." all the time. :( Bob Juch Professional writer -----Original Message----- From: Sally Chirlin [mailto:chirlin@adelphia.net] Sent: Saturday, July 05, 2003 2:16 PM To: VACULPEP-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [VACULPEP] Lesson for today There are a couple of tricks you can use to remember when to use "that" or "who." While we are at this business of genealogy we have an excellent opportunity to improve our use of the English language. One of the common errors observed deals with the use of "who" and "that." Test- When one is referring to a person the correct expression is which of the following? Mary, daughter of Hugh JONES, THAT married Thomas HICKS was mother of three children. or Mary, daughter of Hugh JONES, WHO married Thomas HICKS was mother of three children. If you don't know, it is the latter. Best, Hugh

Dear List Members, If you were effected by the Comcast buy out, then you need to read this, if not delete it. Just this evening, I have receive over 100 requests for me to change e-mail address to a Comcast address. Many of these requests mention multiple lists of which the sender needs their e-mail address changed. It will take me a good week or so to get through them all. My suggestion is; If you still have the ability to unsubscribe go to PASSWORD Central at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ type in your old e-mail address, and follow the directions. You will receive an e-mail from which you can unsubscribe. If you can't do this, then you will just need to re-subscribe with your new address and let the old one bounce off. To re-subscribe this go to John Fuller's mailing list site http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html or remember you can subscribe and or unsubscribe by sending only the word UNSUBSCRIBE or SUBSCRIBE to XXXXXX-L-REQUEST@ROOTSWEB.COM or XXXXXX-D-REQUEST@ROOTSWEB.COM if you are on the Digest List. Naturally change the XXXXXX to the name of the list. If all else fails, contact me, but be understanding if it takes me a while to get to you. Kathleen Burnett List Mom
Records indicate that there were three adult Benjamin HUFFMANs residing in Culpeper County during the American Revolutionary War (ARW) according to VA Census/tax rolls and Dr. Holtzclaw (Germanna Record #5). A fourth Benjamin whose identity is not evident in other records made a statement in the 1846 pension application of Martin DEER. The four are-- HUFFMAN BORN DIED Benjamin1, s/o Henry () 1812 VA Benjamin2, s/o Jacob (John 1714) 1760 c1826 VA Benjamin3, s/o Tillman (Henry 1734) c1763 living1830 IL(Census) Benjamin4, 1757 living 1846 VA No Benjamin Huffman is currently carried as a pension veteran of the ARW in the National Archives files nor in the NSDAR Patriot Index and its annexes. A Benjamin HUFMAN is listed in class #98 of 106 classes (12 to 13 men per class) of militiamen from Culpeper Co., VA who were draftable (1 man per class was selected) in Jan. 1781 to serve with the Continental Army). Benjamin was not the one drafted from his class. Can anyone identify Benjamin4, above? Best regards, Hugh
THE BEST PLACE TO LOOK IN THE LANK RECORDS THEY TELL SOMETIMES ABOUT PEOPLE TRADING SLAVES AND IN WILL WHERE THEY LEAVE THEIR WIFE AND CHILDREN SLAVES ----- Original Message ----- From: SouthernBelRoots@aol.com Sent: Thursday, June 26, 2003 10:19 PM To: VACULPEP-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [VACULPEP] Slave Sales in the Va. Area Hello, I was wondering where you could find information on Slave Sales in Washington County, Virginia from 1770-1825. Slaves bought and sold and to whom. Then in Culpepper County ( Old Rag Mountain Area ) from the 1730's until the 1790's? Same thing. Where were slaves bought and sold in that area? Since Rag Mountain was wilderness in that time period? I am looking for any sales too and from the Bradley families. Also, any too and from the Lillard family. For those of you who are visiting the cemeteries and graves of your loved ones, your ancestors this weekend and have a few extra flowers, think of placing them on one of the lonely graves which are never visited. Or, if you are living in an area where you have no one, think of visiting a cemetery and placing flowers by one of these lonely graves. I live in Logan Utah and tomorrow I will be visiting several local cemeteries and will be placing flowers on graves. Over the past years I have adopted these graves, these people and I hope that someone out there is doing the same for my loved ones. This is the day to remember those who came before us, who forged the paths that we now walk. Kathleen Burnett List Mom
THANK YOU HELENS249@AOL.COM
We have been receiving VACULPEP communications only sporadically (one or two every third day or so), Can you verify that we are stilll listed as VACULPEP subscribers? Thank you.
We have been receiving VACULPEP mail very sporadically. Can you verify that we are still listed in the VACULPEP e-mail? Thanks.
Dear List Members, If you want to find out if you are on a list use Password Central. http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Follow the instructions and you will receive a e-mail list of all Rootsweb Mailing Lists you belong to. If you have not been receiving messages and you see from Password Central you are subscribed, then there have been on postings. A second way is to go to the archives of the list. If you see there has been activity and you have not been receiving the postings, then your address must have been removed by the system for some reason...all you need to do is re-subscribe. Dear Jim & Suzy, People nowadays are buried in cars, with a favorite piano, so with those who have gone before us as I am sure they had their own thoughts of how they wanted to be buried. In Victorian times, people would put pipes from the grave to the surface, incase someone was buried alive--at least this was their thinking. So would not surprise me of an ancestor specifying how to be buried. Here in Texas, close to where I use to live, at Bailey's Prarie, TX, old Mr. Bailey told his wife what he wanted for her to do when he died. He told her to bury him standing up with a jug of whiskey. Well after he died, he was buried standing up, BUT, his wife refused to put a jug of whiskey in with him. The LEGEND goes now: If you see a light in the woods or elsewhere around the countryside during nighttime, it is said old Mr. Bailey is looking for his jug of whiskey. Many people, even old timers have seen this light. Who knows? Thought you might like a good chuckle. Rebecca Bashaw
Linda, Re your reply to Carol re Library of Virginia -- are these records able to be read on Net? Or do you have to be at the Library to see them? See my COONS mentioned -- but how do I access the info -- if I can, that is? Thanks. Ellenor Jo Coons Flint
Hi Carol. Hope this one works: The Library of Virginia The Bible info is in the ARCHIVES AND MANUSCRIPTS CATALOG area When in the ARCHIVES AND MANUSCRIPTS CATALOG area, it will read: Poor quality originals may result in illegible Bible Record images. Images for Miscellaneous Bible Records (MBRC) are now available for volumes 1-54. Search Type: (I get the best luck with SUBJECT) Word or phrase: (This is where I put the surname) If that one doesn't work, here's the home page: Home Page (go into SITE INDEX - left side of page) Some of the information is photocopies of the Bible pages. Not all of the pages are accessible. Good Luck, Linda
