    1. Re: [VACULPEP] Re: Thomas Brown
    2. June, thank you very much. This information feels right. I beleive I have two great grandfathers (third and fourth) named Thomas Brown. I found a marriage in Fredricksburg in 1783 of Cytha Brown with Thomas Brown as wittness. Are there any marriage records before 1780 of St. Marks or Fredricksburg? Joyce

    2. 1750. A "Chapel of ease" was ordered at the Little Fork, and the vestry agreed to meet at or near the old muster-field at the forks of the road, to choose the site, and contract with Thomas Brown to undertake it. (Source: Historical Notes on Culpeper County, VA...St. Mark's Parish; Green Notes) The Brown Family (source same as above) There lies before me a patent for land in the South Fork of the Gourdvine River, from Lord Fairfax, proprietor of the Northern Neck, to John Brown; he paying every year the free rent of one shilling sterling for every 50 acres, on the Feast of St. Michael the Archangel. It is dated 22d June, in the 20th year of our Sovereign Lord George II, by the grace of God King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, and Defender of the Faith, A.D. 1749. (Signed) FAIRFAX The land was surveyed by Major Philip Clayton, and it adjoins the land of Thomas Howison and William Brown. It appears in the vestry-book that Daniel Brown was sheriff and collector of the parish levy. Coleman Brown was clerk and lay reader in the church. Thomas Brown was undertaker of a chapel in the Little Fork; and Capt. William Brown was the contractor for an addition to Buck Run Church. These are the ancestors of the late Armistead and Daniel Brown ad their families. June

    1. [VACULPEP] Re: Thomas Brown Marriage for Joyce in Ky.
    2. Donna S. Boyd
    3. Joyce, There are only two Thomas Browns listed in _Culpeper County, Virginia Marriages, 1780-1853_ by John Vogt & T. William Kethley, Jr., Iberian Publishing Co., Athens, Georgia, 1984, p. 19. The first Thomas Brown is listed as "Thomas C & Frances H Griffin 23 Dec 1843; min. Silas Bruce" Since they didn't marry until after your Thomas left for Kentucky, that wouldn't be he. However, the second one is "Thomas & Elener Weatherall 8 Mar 1796; min. William Mason (Baptist)." This one sounds more plausible as your Thomas. Donna

    3. Dear Listers, I was looking at the few pages I have of the "Minutes of the Great Crossings Baptist Church, Scott Co., KY, 1785-1813." It is indexed, by the way. The minutes are typewritten. Again, I have only a few pages, but the entire document can be found in the Scott Co. Historical Society, Georgetown, KY. On p. 33, I see a Wm Brown with a James written above a carat (^) mark. A line through the name indicates that Brown was no longer a member when the minutes were recorded. There are lots of Johnsons, too. Peggy, Sally, Jemima, Mary, Nancy and Susannah are some women, but there are also the following men: Andrew, jun., Thomas, Daniel, James, Robert and John M., with wife Sooky. I believe that these people may have had roots in Culpeper. Certainly, my Scott Co. Ancestrors did. (Drakes & Bruces. The Drakes were in this church, too. Another, from Fairfax, had a grandparent in VA who was called "papist". It is a long leap from Papist to Baptist. 1. [VACULPEP] BROWNS of Culpeper who went to Elbert Co., Ga.
    2. Karen T. Ledford
    3. I followed with great interest the latest postings on BROWNS in Culpeper Co., Va. My GGGG Grandfather was ANDREW BROWN born 1769 Culpeper Co., Va. he married MARGARETTE ADAMS in 1794. He is buried in Elbert Co., Ga. at Holly Springs Baptist Church. He has always been recognized as Revolutionary Soldier and is buried under DAR monument. Brown researchers have sought for years to prove a father for Andrew Brown. Living in Elbert/Wilkes Co. during the 1790's is also a William Brown. Andrew did name his first born child (a son), William. Also many of the pioneer families that settled Wilkes/Elbert Co., Ga. following the Rev. War, were the Maxwells (who are intermarried with the Pembertons), Higginbothams, Tyners, Thompsons, Ruckers, Teasleys, Browns, Woods, Adams. I am descended from all these with exception of the Pembertons. I have tons of information on these familes and I am also DAR under William Rucker who was Rev. Soldier from Va. and son of Peter Rucker. A large party of Virginians came to the Savannah River Valley area (then Wilkes Co., Ga) with General George Mathews to settle on land grants after the Revolution. Mathews later became Gov. of Ga. These old line Virginia families were already much intermarried, esp. the Ruckers, Teasleys. There are a good number of these families outlines in the book "Thomas Maxwell of Virginia and Georgia and his Descendants", and a number of Allie Families", by Annie Norman, Helen Maxwell Longino, and Annie Lou Maxwell. I found this book in the Archives in Atlanta, Ga. If anyone can help me with finding out who was the Father of my Andrew Brown who married Margarette Adams, please correspond. I recently acquired a book on "ABSTRACTS from the County Court Minute Book of Culpeper Co., Va. 1763--1764", aby A.M. Prichard. In this book there is mention of these BROWNS: Coleman: Daniel: Francis: Garfield: James: John: Nathaniel: Stephen and William. The Thomas Maxwell Family is also from Culpeper Co., Va. and his wife was Mary Pemberton. I note this here because of the other post about Browns and Pembertons. 1. Re: [VACULPEP] Re: Daniel Boone/Slave Questions
    2. Traci - in our family history, we find in wills of HAYNES in Culpeper Co., VA -- and some later in Elbert Co., GA -- as well in Callaway & Saline Cos., MO named slaves...later in the post-Civil War Census household Negroes are found, suggesting, I would conjecture, they are former slaves having been freed. Also, our HURT family in the Fauquier-Culpeper Co. VA-area had a number of slaves in the Censuses. This information is especially of interest to us, as, I'm sure there are many cousins out there...I'm at a loss on how to proceed, since, of course, most records have the slaves as a #, or, in some cases, there are first names given (no last names, of course...and, furthermore, many slaves' names were changed for several reasons). Also, as we are a bi-racial family, this is of special interest to us. Good luck. 1. Re: Fw: Re: [VACULPEP] BROWN & PEDEN marriage date?
    2. I don't know Waunita. I am just trying to put them together in Va. My Thomas Brown left before 1800 for Ky. Many of his children remained. I just found the marriage of his daughter,Cytha, in Fredricksburg Va in 1783. I am getting a feel for St. Marks Church, which had a Brown Family history. Don't know how to get into the church records yet. Joyce

    3. I have a T. R. Brown born ca. 1836 in Culpeper, son of Robert and Ann Brown, who took for a second wife, Nellie Pemberton whom he married on 10 Jan 1884. He had an earlier wife (name unknown) by whom there was a son, Willie or William born Dec 1863. I am connected to the Pemberton side. Anyone out there who know about this family? Some of these children were living in Va in the late !830s, others already deceased. I do not know Thomas Sr.'s spouse name. I hope I haven't inconvienced you. Thank you for your time. I hope to visit this summer though and spend a day going through old records. What would be helpful since I'm new to this sort of field research would be if someone could tell me where exactly in Culpeper to go to see these records, if I need to make an appointment, if there are fees involved, etc. Can I just show up at the courthouse and say "I'm here to find some old books"? 1. Re: [Re: [VACULPEP] Re:Great Crossing
    2. Tom, I was just there, Great Crossing. I did not drive back to see the house. The school site has a fense around it and a historical marker. Both the town and site are very near the North Fork of Elkhorn Creek. This was an old buffalo trace. The herds were on their way to Stamping Ground, a small town a few miles west. Salt licks were their. My interest was Thomas Brown Sr.who possibly taught at the Indian school. Thomas came from Culpeper Co., Va His grand children were born there. Do you have any Browns in your family line? Interesting isn't it. Joyce in Ky.
