Gee Whiz, Lisa, I didn't mean to ruffle your feathers. I'll take note of your protest and mark it down in my little red book. This is very simple: if you have messages for just one then just e-mail that one. Here is a perfect example. The list does not care about your one reply. But, like you, I will respond to everyone. Wow, even more confusion... these are a completely different set of children than the ones I have. This has to be a different set of people, or else one of these genealogies is wrong on some detail or another. Donna, Thank you for the praise but there have been a whole lot of people go out of their way to gather information and provide help to me in the past. I'm just trying in a small way to repay what these dear friends have done for me. Ron Thompson Andalusia, Alabama
I have a Susanna(h) PINER m'd Edmund ARCHER in Culpeper Co. in 1788 by Isham Tatum. I don't know if this Susannah is a sister(?) to the Thomas PINER being discussed. Would love to work with anyone with information on these lines. Herein lies the mystery... Ive seen this, as well as near identical genealogies which show that Thomas Piner's wife was not Elizabeth Swindler daugher of John Swindler of this line but rather Elizabeth Swindler daughter of Germanna colonist Hannah Weaver and John Swindle (half English colonial, half Germanna colonial). Thomas Piner lived and married in Culpeper. John and Hannah and their daughter Elizabeth Swindle also lived in Culpeper. John Swindler and his daughter Elizabeth lived in Fairfax... not TOO far (a little over an hour by car today, so, a few days ride by horse). The Swindlers did move from Fairfax, Ohio, Rappahanock, and even Culpeper, so it is possible. Given how often names were spelled variantly, and given that secondary sources indicating it was E. Swindle of Culpeper far outnumber the sources indicating E. Swinder of Fairfax... I kind of wonder if she may be the proper one. Also, there is no record of the Germanna Elizabeth Swindle ever marrying. There's lots of documentation on the other Swindle kids marrying off, but Elizabeth sort of drops off the map in the Germanna records I've seen. The dates are pretty well matched too. Thomas Piner lived 1773-1829. Elizabeth Swindle lived 1774 to an unknown date. Thomas and Elizabeth married 22 Dec 1791. Also, consider that the family moved westward to Kentucky, and I've turned up the following... They had Children: Presley, about 1794; Richardson Owen, 1806; John Evans, 1809; Margaret M., unknown; James G., unknown; William C., unknown; Thomas A., unknown. 1820 census shows a Thomas Piner in Boone County, KY, as head of a household with 3 males under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 16-18, 2 males 18-25, 1 male 45+, 2 females 45+, and one male slave under 14 years old. It also indicates that 4 males in the home were in the agriculture business. The 1830 census no longer has Thomas Piner, but has an Elizabeth Piner who was probably his widow (note the similar family make-up: 3 males under 5, 2 males 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 2 females 20-30, 1 female 50-60, 1 female 80-90, 1 males slave 24-36; 1 person deaf & dumb over age 25). Related Germanna families ended up in the same area of Boone KY and show up on the same census pages. The genealogy below doesnt match. It lists Thomas Piner as being born 1771, but dying in 1811. It lists Elizabeth Swindler as 1771-1808. This would have Elizabeth dead a year before her 3rd son's birth. I can think of a few possibilities... 1) The Thomas Piner I descend from married Elizabeth Swindle, daughter of Hannah Weaver and John Swindle, and the court record just added an R to her name. The Elizabeth Swindler in the genealogy either married a different Thomas Piner or else the genealogies just somehow got confused by the single marriage record I've heard of, which indicates a Thomas Piner and Elizabeth Swindler (with R) marrying on 22 Dec. 1791 in Culpeper. This is my preferred theory at the moment 2) The genealogy below is correct and Thomas Piner married Elizabeth Swindler (who at some point moved from Fairfax to Culpeper - seems some of her family did, so that's not absurd), but the death dates given are wrong or else the census data indicating a longer life and my records of more children are wrong. I'd need to find more information to see if this couple had children and could be my ancestors 3) The Thomas Piner and Elizabeth Swindler in the genealogy below are two different people who were born with similar names around the similar time and ended up marrying at some point, making for a two very similar couples in one town... somewhat odd. A few other interpretations as well, of course. I think the key here is to find out more about the Elizabeth Swindle from Culpeper and the Elizabeth Swindler from Fairfax. Thomas Piner (from Culpeper) was the son of an indentured servant (probably English) who was living in Culpeper at least as of 1764. Thomas was born 1773. Elizabeth Swindle descended from a long line of Swindle, Swindell, etc ancestors who were indentured servants in Jamestown who migrated towards the Culpeper frontier and married into at least 2 Germanna families (the Crees/Greys and Weavers/Webers). The Elizabeth Swindler below was daughter of a John Swindler (doesnt help the confusion much that both Elizabeths had fathers named John). Elizabeth was born in the pretty old and ritzy town of Fairfax, a far cry from the frontier farmland of Culpeper. John Swindler came from New Jersey, and I don't know anything much else about him. It seems to me like the Fairfax Swinders could be from somewhat higher social classes than the frontier farmers the Swindles and Piners... which may not have had an impact on which of the two Thomas was more likely to have met and married. Hard to say without finding out more on all three (four?) individials. Fortunately I am in driving distance of Fairfax and Culpeper. Anyone know how I might go about looking for old records in these areas? Hello George, My G Grandfather JOHN BROWN was born in Culpeper Co, VA I am told. He was born June 24, 1801 as his tombstone told he was 6 days, 7 MO & 75 years old. He died Jan. 30, 1877. There were so many Brown's & JOHN BROWN'S in this area that I have been unable to make the connection with others in the family, JOHN BROWN married RACHEL PEDEN in about 1828 & their 1st child, ALEXANDER P. BROWN was born in VA in 1829. This Brown family then moved to (I believe) HAMILTON, OHIO and their son ISRAEL was born there in about 1831. In my research I find quite a few Brown's living in that area and perhaps some are relatives. JOHN & his little family moved on to Eugene TWP, Vermillion Co. IN. as he was a sawyer and there were several mills there. They lived there about 30 years according to US census, the last census in 1860 showing them. Nine more child were born to them at this location & some stayed in this area. Between 1860 & 1870 JOHN BROWN moved to Osage TWP, Miami Co. KS, where his oldest son ALEXANDER P. had a homestead and son BENJAMIN & ANDREW both lived in the area for a time. JOHN BROWN & several others in the family are buried in the FONTANA CEMETERY in the Osage Twp, Miami Co. PLEASE WRITE and tell me if you know of any connections to the Brown's in Culpeper. Thank You, Waunita M. Thought I would see if in my absence from research, someone might have an interest in the Kendrick Family of Culpepper County, VA. Jacob Kendrick was born in 1722 and died in 1793 in Culpepper County, VA. Benoni Kendrick - his son was born in Culpepper Co. in 1758. He vacated the county, moving first to Kentucky and points west. Would love to correspond with anyone interested in this family. Candee Hoff Previously corresponded at genealogy6@aol.com new email address genealogysix@aol.com
Hello Everyone, Some of you may know me, some of you may not remember me and some of won't care but I would like to inform everyone that I will be heading to Pocahontas, Pendleton, Harrison, Marion Counties of West Virginia around the 20th of July for a McCartney Family Reunion in Fairmont, Harrison County, West Va. on the 26th. I plan on being in Pocahontas County on or about the 21st through the 23rd. Then I will travel north-northwesterly on to Shinnston, Harrison County, WV and staying for at least four or five days or leaving to come back to Alabama sometime around the 29th or 30th. I would like to extend to everyone an invitation to meet with me during my trip who might like to. I will only provide addresses and telephone numbers to those who respond to me by email before the 18th of this month because I don't wish to cause any of my relatives and kinfolk problems by giving out this private information. To the others whom don't know me from shinenola the reason I'm providing this information is that if I possibly can I will attempt to do some genealogical research for anyone who has connections with these people and places. Nothing to heavy because I just need to visit and be blessed by the love of my family for a while. Some of whom I haven't meet and others that I haven't seen but once or twice in my near 55 years. Some of the surnames of intersest are: Thompson, Robertson, Cochran, Rexroad, Crockett and others that I can't remember right now from the Virginia-West Virginia border areas of Pendleton and Pocahontas County. The others are Martin, McCartney, Hardin, Wright, McCune from the north-central portion of the state namely the counties of Harrison, Gilmer, Marion, Taylor, Barbour and Lewis. I look forward to hearing from any of you or all of you. Ron Thompson Andalusia, Alabama monk@wavezcom.com
