Let me be more explicit. Culpeper County (among many others) is full of private burial grounds. Genealogists and family historians who are interested in the protection of such sacred grounds will find the storyof imterest. So, perhaps I should have said SOME genealogists will find this story of interest. I used to live in Fairfax County, but I wasn't into genealogy at the time. Missed my opportunity.
Did you know that Gunston Hall Plantation is a very nice modest restored plantation that is open to the public in northern Virginia? One of my favorite places to visit. Someday maybe you can come here to visit it and do some research. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, September 10, 2006 9:56 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [VACULPEP] Re: John Cooke family Trying to get behind my brick wall John George Cook, 1812 - 1884. We've got a 25/25 match between Walter Mason who is descended from the James Mason who lived in Culpeper (but a 1769 deed says he was from Stafford) and another Mason. We don't know this other Mason's lineage (he's guessing Gunston Hall), but it sure would help if some of you Mason descendents (and I know there are descendants of John/Mary Nelson on these lists) could scare up a male cousin or brother surnamed Mason to give us some more samples. It is my guess (but I've run out of materials to provide any proof) that James Mason was a brother to the John Mason in Stafford--at this point only DNA evidence is going to help with that connection. It is also a possibility that all the Masons in early Stafford were related--but again, no materials to prove that. We need male Masons of the Gunston Hall line, the William/John Mason line, and the George of Aquia line to do the DNA test. The two matching Masons tested as a fairly rare haplotype--at least rare for the British Isles--which would probably be a dead giveaway to a relationship somewhere in time--even if the other markers didn't match perfectly. Unfortunately, I only know female descendants of Masons in Stafford and Culpeper. HELP! Karen Dale

I have personally gone to his grave and examined the tombstone to make sure of the date and there is no doubt. I have also taken rubbings of this stone. He probaly died a few weeks before that. When Joseph's son, David, died, his death record says he was born in Culpeper County, VA, but I am not convinced it is correct.
